  Goat antelope
The domestic sheep and domestic goat are both part of the goat antelope group, and the group itself is part of the family Bovidae, which in other branches contains the antelopes and domestic cattle.
The goat antelope or caprid group is known from as early as the Miocene, but did not reach its greatest diversity until the recent ice ages, when many of its members became specialised for marginal, often extreme, environments: mountains, deserts, and the sub-Arctic region.
The ancestors of the modern sheep and goats (both rather vague and ill-defined terms) are thought to have moved into mountainous regions: sheep becoming specialised occupants of the foothills and nearby plains, and relying on flight and clumping for defence against predators; goats adapting to very steep terrain where predators are at a disadvantage.

San Diego Zoo's Animal Bytes: Antelope
The social life of antelope depends a lot on the type of habitat they live in and how much food and water is available.
Many antelope that live in large groups at least part of the year also have special scent glands on their hooves, so they leave the herd’s scent on the ground for any stray members to find.
Antelope are herbivores, with an odd exception: some species of duikers have been known to kill and eat insects, small mammals, and birds.

 Brain Tanning Goat Skin
I have been told that goat and antelope skins are approximately the same thickness but, to my thinking, antelopes are an exotic to the overwhelming majority of tanners: most will never see an antelope let alone have the opportunity to make buckskin out of one.
And because it is available during the spring and summer, not only does it cut down on the need to store a year's supply of deerskin, but it cuts short the frantic race to get all of your hides during a brief hunting season.
Overall, goats would seem to be a great untapped resource for the brain tanners of the world.
