During winter the goatherd and his family of goats spent much of their time inside, Festus sleeping on stacks of hay that his goats ate from under him.
He closed with the old goatherd who apparently intended to make some pathetic gesture of defending himself with the gnarled old root he used for a cane.
The old goatherd stood before him, not with a staff, but with his sword raised high by trembling twigs of arms.
