I think cryptozoology is a good thing, the government and other institutions just dismiss all these claims and refuse to investigate them, which just leaves them as a mystery and fans the flames.
With all the different sightings there have been, I am inclined to think they have seen something, I mean there can't be 500 stupid rednecks who see an owl and think it is a demon sent from hell.

I've been studying cryptozoology for years, and I have to say, these eluded even me. But all of the aforementioned monsters, as well as many more, are featured in W.Haden Blackman's The Field Guide to North American Monsters.
The book is really more of a reference guide, covering such general categories as Hairy Humanoids, Lake Monsters and Sea Serpents, Flying Monsters, Dwarves and Giants, Cryptid Animals, Beastmen and Beastwomen, Supernatural Monsters, and Enigmatic Entities.
Some of my personal favorites are the Grinning Man, the Wendigo, the Goatman (also my brother's personal favorite) and the Winsted Wildman (hits a little close to home, or at least where I vacation every year).
