Goatsnake kicks off this split with two songs which are heavy as concrete.
Goatsnake however never forgets to focus on making their music sound as heavy as possible, assuring this is one hell of a doomy release.
Just when you're starting to think that Goatsnake is nice and heavy the Witch pops her ugly mug around the corner and redefines the term.

The appearance of new Goatsnake material is a cause for both celebration and complaint: Celebration because it's new material from a really good band thought to be gone forever and the addition of former Kyuss bass-slinger Scott Reeder to the lineup, and complaint because of its brevity.
Hopefully, they'll scoot a little quicker for the next release, because at their current pace, it'll be 12 years before they have enough material for a full-length.
For those not familiar with the ass-dragging beauty of the unique brand of heavy that Goatsnake calls its own, look forward to monstrous guitar riffs played in a tone so crushing that it could very conceivably cause spinal defects in those who stand within a few hundred feet of the stacks at the show.

With releases on Hydrahead Records, Frank Kozik's famed Man's Ruin, and Southern Lord Records (co-owned by guitarist Greg Anderson) Goatsnake could be considered a quintessential stoner/doom band of their time.
Facts like these suggest that while Goatsnake might not have been the best Sabbath hounds to materialize after the circus (led by Kyuss) essentially left town, they were among the heartiest, and the most legitimate heirs to the California stoner throne.
I, and Goatsnake did little to support the recordings live, suggesting that the band was beginning to lose their drive.

Adding to their affiliation with Burning Witch, Goatsnake released a split CD with the band on Hydrahead Records.
The band's finest hour was yet to come, as Goatsnake put any questions about their heart to rest by putting out their best (and last to date) full-length recording, Flower of Disease in October 2000.

Goatsnake pool all their influences and output something that is not lackluster, but Goatsnake goodness.
Equal parts doom, stoner and rock, this is sure a soundtrack to guzzling Schaefer in a trailer home down in the deepest depths of the south.
Pete's vocals are all too fitting for the setting and actually sung quite well, which sets Goatsnake ahead of the Sabbath clones with barking dogs for singers.

The first thing that strikes you about this long-awaited Goatsnake LP is the unique cover art.
The album begins with a distorted roar and then launches headlong into a head down Sabbath charge on opener "Slippin the Stealth" (quote from the inlay: Goatsnake uses Sunn Amps, Gibson Guitars & Basses and Sabbath Riffs exclusively because they want the best) and what follows is pure stoner satisfaction.
At all times when listening to "I" there is a sense that Goatsnake are not approaching things in a straightforward way.

Appropriately, there is some difficulty in deciding where to begin: Goatsnake’s lineup alone is the pinnacle of sonic gravitas, with ex/current members of Sunn O))) (guitarist Greg Anderson), The Obsessed (bassist Scott Reeder), and D.C. hardcore outfit Scream (vocalist Pete Stahl) larding the pot.
And dealing with Goatsnake is analogous, if only for the fact that while they may proceed in a predictable fashion, referential — and humorous — detours are taken along the way.
Yet, it must be noted that the members of Goatsnake aren’t covered in corpse paint and engaging self-mutilation; there’s no overbearing ideology or cache of underground websites to promote the band — and for good reason.

Released on Hydrahead, this split from two of the slowest names in doom offers a change to their usual roster of grind/hardcore acts - although they have been known to release some excellent drone/noise from the likes of SUNN O))) and Merzbow.
