René Goblet (November 26, 1828 - September 13, 1905) was a French politician, first minister of France for a period in 1886-1887.
On the fall of the Freycinet cabinet in December he formed a cabinet in which be reserved for himself the portfolios of the interior and of religion.
The Goblet cabinet was unpopular from the outset, and it was with difficulty that anybody could be found to accept the ministry of foreign affairs, which was finally given to Gustave Flourens.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
When Harry arrives at Hogwarts, he finds that the Triwizard Tournament - which was banned since many participants died during it - was to be restarted, and to be held at Hogwarts.
The names of all intending participants would be put into a goblet - known as the Goblet of Fire - which would shoot out one name from each of the three competing wizarding schools (Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang).
After choosing Viktor Krum from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts, the Goblet spits out Harry's name - although he was too young to have added his name to the Goblet.
