Goblin (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Goblin are an Italian progressive rock band who are known for their soundtracks on Dario Argento films (e.g.
Their early work spawned one progressive rock record named after the band, until they were called in as replacements for composer Giorgio Gaslini, who had left the film Profondo Rosso after a conflict with director Dario Argento.
What was left of the band continued to work on further soundtracks, but there was a partial reunification for Argento's Tenebrae (1982) (although they were credited separately, not as Goblin).

The fact that Goblin was an Italian progressive rock band already makes them somewhat unique, but they also pursued an intriguingly unorthodox career path, recording the majority of their music for horror film soundtracks, many with director Dario Argento.
Of Goblin's subsequent projects, the most significant was undeniably their work on 1978's Dawn of the Dead (known as Zombi in Italy), the sequel to Night of the Living Dead, co-produced by George Romero and Dario Argento.
The Goblin name was occasionally resurrected for an attractive project during the rest of the '80s, and rumors of a full-fledged reunion surfaced in the late '90s.

Taken in context with the rest of the Italian scene, Goblin were also unusual in that they managed to grow and develop during the late 70's when most other Italian bands were forced to compromise by record companies that were no longer interested in progressive rock.
The kingpin of Goblin is often quoted as being Claudio Simonetti, a talented and unique keyboard player, his origins were in 60's amateur bands, which eventually lead to the formation of Ritratto Di Dorian Gray (Picture of Dorian Gray), apparently a classical rock trio in the generic Italian style.
Goblin's music was only enough to fill one side of an LP, the second side being a compilation of earlier "hits", and curiously the original music here was rather untypical of the Goblin of the era, being a step back to the ROLLER style with a hard-rock edge and a hint of Focus!

The cover of Goblin Cock's debut CD Bagged and Boarded makes it clear that the band is being entirely literal: The cover depicts an angry goblin king, sitting atop his throne while flaunting an equally angry member with a giant Prince Albert dangling from its tip.

Goblin formed in the mid-70s and achieved their greatest acclaim for their horror movie soundtracks, although they also did produce some non-soundtrack releases.
Anyway, in Goblin's case, since they are mostly soundtracks and by definition the track's do NOT blend together and develop upon one another, a compilation is perhaps a great place to start (and perhaps end) since it cuts out the mediocre tracks.
Goblin is heavily influenced by Yes and Simonetti actually moved to England in 1973 to work with Eddie Offord.

The original drummer Bordini was sacked, having refused to sign the contract, and replaced by Walter Martino, formerly with Simonetti in Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray, and this line-up recorded the official first album, while the previous LP was released under the name of Cherry Five in 1976.
