Anthem 4 England - English National Anthem
Petition the PM - We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to initiate a Parliamentary debate on the adoption of a national anthem for England that is distinct from the British national anthem.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with God save the Queen apart from the fact that it is the British anthem; the musical equivalent of the Union Flag..............Oh and, as a song, it blows.
God Save the Queen can continue to be the British anthem, to be sung as a celebration of Britishness or the monarch, by the individual nations of Britain, or by the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish when they are gathered together as Brits.

Anthem 4 England - News and Opinion
It is wrong for England not to have its own National Anthem (there appear to be three popular alternatives: Land of Hope & Glory, Jerusalem & Rule Britannia) instead effectively hi-jacking God Save the Queen (which belongs to all Nations of the UK and the Commonwealth).
By this logic England would have two anthems, God Save the Queen for when we are competing against countries unfortunate enough not to have the Queen on their banknotes, and an English anthem for when we are competing against countries that share the same head of state (Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, etc.).
And therein lies the real problem with Rosindell’s plan, for whilst the English and Northern Irish fans are fairly well disposed towards singing God Save the Queen, the Scots and Welsh (especially in football and rugby) have not sung it for years.

When Louis XIV was scheduled to open the educational institution at St-Cyr (1686), his mistress (later, queen), the Marquise de Maintenon, commissioned Lully to write the tune to be sung by the pupils as Dieu Protège le Roi.
The French, apparently, did not use it again until 1745 at which time the Old Pretender, claiming to be King James III of England, was organising his rebellion from France (he lived at St-Germain-de-Laye).
BTW England has never officially adopted a national anthem even though this song was the first "national anthem" and the song that started the craze that other countries followed, first by translating the English text and later by getting more creative and writing original works.

*** Save the Queen | Cosmic Variance
Someone apparently thought that somebody should be shielded from hearing the word “God,” but I honestly don’t know if it was for fear of having the Lord’s name taken in vain, or dislike for heavy-handed religiosity.
I saw The Queen in theaters, and the only mentions of “God” I recall were when people were talking about how she believes she is the monarch because it is God’s will.
I can see cutting “homosexuals” since it could be seen as slightly offensive, but the “God” references couldn’t really be construed as offensive to anyone, including atheists/agnostics like me (unless, I suppose, I suppose very conservative Jews might object to the use of a name at all).
