  God and gender
In Christianity, God is thought to be a trinity in which there are three persons that are united in a single unit.
Neopagan duo-theistic philosophies tend to emphasise on the God and Goddess' (or Lord and Lady's) genders as being analogous of a concept similar to that of the oriental Yin and yang; ie, two complementary opposites.
The idea of God being an "It" rather than a "he" or "she" does have some support in Jewish, Christian and Islamic medieval thought, much of which was based on Neo-Aristotelian philosophy.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: God and gender
God the Father has traditionally been described with male imagery, and God the Son is believed to literally have become incarnate as a human male, with male sexual anatomy (some Christian teachings are derived from this point).
God the Holy Spirit has been referred to using male, female or neutral grammatical gender depending on the language (the Hebrew word רוח ruaḥ is grammatically feminine, the Greek word πνευμα pneuma is grammatically neuter, and the Latin word spiritus is grammatically masculine).
In this view, it is proper for God to beget (as fathers are often conceived of acting), rather than for God to be the passive recipient of begetting (as mothers are often conceived of as acting).

God and Gender: How Do We Address God?
A contemporary hymn exclaims, "Mother and God, to you we sing; wide is your womb, warm is your wing." This hymn squares perfectly with the fertility cults of old, together with their sacral prostitutes and their religiously sanctioned promiscuity.
As soon as God's transcendence is compromised, the foundational doctrine of the Christian faith, the doctrine of the Trinity, is undervalued.
The refrain is, "I am a jealous God." God is jealous not in that He's insecure and He needs to have His ego strengthened; neither is He jealous in that He craves what someone else possesses just because He lacks it.

 God and Gender in Judaism
Gender sensitivity is the rubric that for two decades has been used to purge Reform worship of masculine imagery and symbolism and to replace it, gradually, with sexually neutral or (in some cases) explicitly feminine language.
To think of God as a woman like myself, to see Her as both powerful and nurturing, to see Her imaged with a woman's body, with womb, with breasts-this was an experience of ultimate signficance.
God's predominantly masculine character may be textured so as to account for the feminine-which is also contained in the divine-but it cannot be repealed.

Subject: God and Gender A subject that I find intriguing is the whole question of a gender
From: Jim Mork Subject: God and Gender A subject that I find intriguing is the whole question of a gender for God.
Science, as we have known it since the Renaissance, has discovered that gender is a particular strategy for reproducing life that is not even employed at all levels of biological complexity.
And some misguided feminist rebels want to believe in God the Mother (two lies make a truth, right?) Some of the great contributions of the last 20 years when the feminist movement has impacted our society has been the growing realization that even our own gender is mostly a cultural artifact.

Theology Today - Vol 46, No.2 - July 1989 - TABLE TALK - Bible Translation and the Gender of God
The contemporary inclusive language argument too easily assumes, for example, that all third person masculine singular pronoun references to God in the Hebrew scriptures imply the opposite of "she"; that is, that the use of masculine pronouns infers God is male.
Therefore, God is never referred to as "it." In spite of the use of the plural form of 'Elohim ("God") with singular pronouns, the Hebrew writers did not characteristically refer to the God of Israel as "they," for this would have had antimonotheistic implications.
It is God to whom the pronouns refer, and when the two names are used in their place the meaning of the biblical text is not diminished.

 God's gender, by the pinknun
We are told to imagine God in male-gendered metaphors: as father, king, and as husband (the church is his Bride).
God gave men and women separate strengths that are masculine and feminine, which balance each other out.
If God is only man, and only males are created in his image, holiness is than made only for man. When a culture/religion thinks of God as only male, no wonder men believe they are greater than women.

However there have been prophetesses (biblical), and they were told specifically how to dress in order to present themselves with authority as given by God (head covered, quiet in their ways for example), but they were not to be dismissed, else there would be hell to pay.
But all that is creating God in man's image instead of vice versa...I think this earthly vessel that spirit travels around in currently is a weak representation of the original.

 Is God Gender Biased?
Of course, God didn't hand down those laws, but the Levitical priesthood knew that by attributing them to God, that God's Children would deprive themselves in order to comply.
If God's Hebrew Children didn't transgress often enough for the penalties to keep the Levitical priesthood and their families well fed, they needed only to make some adjustments in the rules.
The truth may be a breath of fresh air for those who are representative of God's half that was relegated to the footnotes (by self-serving scribes) in the redacted Holy Writ.

Ways of Knowing God: Gender and the Brain
Keller claims that "processes which involve a blurring of the boundary between subject and object" have come to be associated with the feminine, and the posture of "objectification" associated with the masculine.
Women’s brains are predisposed to perceive life -- and God -- according to a pattern of connection and ordinariness, while men perceive life -- and God -- according to a pattern of polarities and otherness.
In their quest for God, they became what they already symbolized, "the fleshly, the nurturing, the suffering, the human." Instead of inverting what they were (most likely they didn’t have that choice), they deepened what they were.

However, my argument is that in order to say we are a church that respects diversity in how we name God we must be able demonstrate we equally value (not necessarily equally use) different images for God.
As such, gender neutral (in general) with gender laden (for specific attributes) seems to capture this mystery the best.
b) as mentioned previously, gender neutral language allows people who strongly relate to male (or female) images to still connect with the liturgy because they remain free to overlay their own images on the gender-neutral base.

 About Gender: The Bookshelf
A pioneer in the study of gender and social stereotypes, and a leading feminist thinker, Professor Bem explores in a very readable way, her assertion that Western gender ideology is founded on, and constrained by androcentrism, gender polarisation and biological essentialism.
A sequel to her earlier book, the author enlarges on many of her themes, but she also asserts that sex, let alone gender, is not as clear cut as it would seem.
It is illuminating that, in 1960, the author was accused by feminists of being a biological determinist, and in 1989 of being a mentalist.

That goes further to prove that God may be "bisexual," you could say.
If everyone's in God's image, and God is both male and female, this mixture in every person makes sense.
The masculine, perhaps, represents the stronger aspects of a person's---and God's---personality; the feminine, the gentler, kinder aspect (keeping in mind that these attributes are not exclusive to each gender).

It seems very strange that the idea that God can be regarded as feminine arouses such hostility.
In the long history and prehistory of mankind's religious beliefs extending over 40,000 years, for three quarters of that immense period men of our kind worshipped a mother goddess.
This still seems to me to fly in the face of reason, that the Creator should not be allowed to be seen in the image of a woman who was created by God to be a mother and the Creator of life for each of us.
