A church has stood on the site of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Godalming, since at least the mid ninth century.
The church contains carved stones which have been dated to c.820-840 and a few Anglo Saxon remnants survive in the present structure, which was largely rebuilt in the late tenth or early eleventh century.
In the thirteenth century, the cruciform church of the Normans was converted into a rectangle by the construction of the north and south chapels and nave aisles.

The parish of Godalming covers an area of approximately 100 square miles, being bounded on the north by the parish of Guildford, on the east by the parishes of Bramley and Cranleigh, on the south by the parish of Haslemere and on the west by the parish of Farnham.
Godalming is the only town in the parish but there are large villages to the west and south west, as well as rural areas.
The previous Parish Council was replaved by a Finance and general purposes Committee and Co-ordinators were appointed in such areas as ecumenism, marriage and family life, pastoral renewal, social concerns and justice and peace.

The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas and has been a parish church since before 1301.
It is interesting to see the parish records which recalled that clothing, blankets, flannel, medicine and even brandy were distributed to the poor of the parish long before what is now known as the Welfare State.
Note the plain Norman doorway to the church and the old sundial, the arm of which is missing, from the South wall.

It was a credit to the strength of Bargate that it was chosen for the main structure, standing on top of the natural chalk bedrock, which would have been more readily available.
The same stone was used in Godalming Parish Church, which dates back to Saxon times.
In more recent years, it was used to construct Charterhouse School (completed 1872), and was also favoured by locally based architect Edwin Lutyens for much of his domestic work.

The idea of a music festival for Godalming was proposed by Mr Norman Askew, County Music Adviser, and those interested met on 15th March 1947 at The Priory in Church Street, Godalming, the home of Dr and Mrs Turner.
She was head teacher of a number of Surrey schools at the time of the early Festivals, retired to Godalming in 1972, and soon became a member of the Festival committee.
The first school choir classes in 1947 were held at the Godalming County Grammar School in Tuesley Lane but in the 1950s they moved to the Borough Hall, where they were run as a non-competitive day, notably under the direction of Mr Heptinstall, headmaster of Godalming Church of England Primary School (in Moss Lane).

The Georgia delegation then proceeded to the Parish Church of All Saints for a Tercentenary memorial service.General Oglethorpe's remains are located in the interior of the church.
It was also a time for celebration, as Dr. Don Stanton led the entire church in a chorus of "Happy Birthday" recalling the 300th birthday of little "Jamie." The service concluded with Governor Miller placing a wreath on the floor of the church directly above the entombed remains of General Oglethorpe and his wife, Elizabeth.

The world's largest memorial associated with the sinking of the Titanic is to be found next to Godalming Parish Church and is known as the Phillips Memorial Cloister.
On Sunday, 13th April 1997, a Commemorative Service was held within the Phillips Memorial, Godalming, to honour Jack Phillips and to remember those who perished on the RMS Titanic.
Flowers were laid by John Young (on behalf of Godalming), by Mr I McNamee of GEC Marconi Communications, and by a member of Farncombe Church Choir.

Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696, in London, England; he was the tenth and last child of Eleanor and Theophilus Oglethorpe.
His father owned other property in Godalming and the neighboring town of Haslemere, and the rent from these gave the Oglethorpes a comfortable life.
He was buried in a vault beneath the chancel floor of the Parish Church of All Saints, which stands immediately adjacent to Cranham Hall.

As the foremost expert on the Church structure, Alan Bott, recently related to a conducted tour group, the early 16th century found a need for urgent repairs to the building, but the usual tale of a lack of funds to do so.
The solution which seems to have occurred to William Westbrook (died 1537) of the local Westbrook family/Manor, was to write round to fellow veterans of the battle of Flodden (near Branxton, Northumberland), fought between the English under Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, and the invading Scots, on 9/9/1513.
This then finally explains the puzzle of why Godalming church should be studded with the coat of arms of Tudor warriors who had nothing whatsoever to do with the Town or area.

The village of Burpham with its part-Saxon church is peaceful and lovely and in the afternoon the path sweeps down to meander along beside the river Arun, offering increasingly spectacular view of Arundel Castle.
Further on through a lych gate and a hedge was the parish church of St. Peters, rebuilt in the mid-19th century because it was falling down, with an interior so colourful it seems to have a Moorish look about it.
It was worth it to see the boathouse on the river Wey, the floodlit parish church and the many ancient half-timbered houses in the high street.
