Cavaignac, Eugène   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Cavaignac, General Louis Eugène was a previously obscure army general whose principal role in 1848 was to crush the insurrection of the Parisian workers during the June Days.
The son of a Montagnard of 1792, Cavaignac imbibed republican ideals as a youth along with his older brother Godefroy, who was an insurgent in the revolution of 1830 and for several years thereafter was one of the most prominent republican opponents of the early July Monarchy.
Cavaignac was one of the few successful electoral opponents of Louis Napoleon thereafter, but had to surrender his seat in 1852 and again in 1857 on his refusal to take the oath of loyalty to the new emperor.

 July Revolution
While they had contented themselves with words, the small Republican-Imperialist party, aided by the almost entire absence of the army and police, and by the convenience which the narrow, winding, paved streets of those times offered for fighting, had determined upon the revolution and brought it to pass.
But the Republican party, which desired to re-establish the Republic of 1793, recruited chiefly from among the students and workmen, and led by Godefroy Cavaignac[?], the son of a Conventionalist, and by the chemist Raspail, had no hold on the departments nor on the dominating opinion in Paris.
Consequently this premature attempt was promptly seized upon by the Liberal bourgeoisie and turned to the advantage of the Orleanist party, which had been secretly organised since 1829 under the leadership of Adolphe Thiers, with the National as its organ.

Alfred Dreyfus Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
Zola hoped to bring the facts of Dreyfus's case before a civil court, where it would be more difficult for the army to conceal what had happened; he was only partially successful, but increased public concern and violence in the streets forced the authorities to take further action.
The minister of war, Godefroy Cavaignac, aiming to quiet criticism, publicly revealed much of the evidence against Dreyfus.
Cavaignac's further investigation led to the confession and suicide (Aug. 31, 1898) of an Intelligence officer, Lt. Col.

Cavaignac fils was also a great patriot and as military reporter for the Chamber Budget Committee he became familiar with the financial demands of rearmament.
Aside from the author's tendentious portrayal of the history of the Cavaignacs, his focus on Godefroy Cavaignac's anomalous support for "socialist" legislation poses some fascinating questions about the complexities and contradictions of French politics in the 1890s.

First, it is necessary to draw distinctions between the two periods of the Dreyfus Affair
(Chapman, 148) The change of government in June, 1898, resulted in the appointment of War Minister as Godefroy Cavaignac, who was determined to clear up the Dreyfus case completely.
He was staunchly anti-revisionist, but ordered a thorough investigation of the secret file, which by now contained over 4,000 documents.
Unfortunately for Cavaignac, one of the documents was discovered to be a forgery, and on August 30, Henry confessed before Cavaignac and was arrested.

The future proved me right.--Let me open a parenthesis here to tell you that I firmly believe that [former minister of war Godefroy] Cavaignac and [General Staff officer Gaudérique] Roget received from Henry complete signed confessions about the forgeries as well as about his complicity with Esterhazy.
They then destroyed the real record of the proceedings.
