In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  MTV.com - Movies - Godfrey Cambridge
In 1961, Cambridge was one of several fl performers whose career was given a booster shot by appearing in Jean Genet's play The Blacks: he won an Obie award for his portrayal of an African American gentleman who transforms into an elderly white woman.
In films since 1959, Cambridge was starred as Harlem detective Gravedigger Jones in Cotton Comes to Harlem (1969) and Come Back Charleston Blue (1972); and, in an interesting variation of his Blacks role, Cambridge portrayed a white businessman who turns fl overnight in the bitter fantasy Watermelon Man (1969).
Godfrey Cambridge was 43 years old when, while playing Idi Amin in the TV production Victory at Entebbe, he collapsed on the set, the victim of a fatal heart attack.

Hardy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Deeply unhappy at Cambridge, Hardy took the opportunity to leave in 1919 when he was appointed as Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford.
He had chosen not to live in the best rooms while at Cambridge, and Hilbert was so concerned that Hardy was not being properly treated that he wrote to the Master of the College pointing out that the best mathematician in England should have the best rooms.
Snow in [5] says that Hardy returned to Cambridge for two reasons, firstly that he still considered Cambridge the centre of English mathematics and the Sadleirian chair the foremost mathematics chair in England, and secondly, that he could keep his rooms in College at Cambridge while this was not possible at Oxford.

Jeff Gerber (Godfrey Cambridge) is an offensive bigot, misogynist, and all-around jackass.
Godfrey Cambridge gives a decent performance — his over-the-top white man harms the illusion somewhat, but his somber acceptance of his new place in life is delivered in touching fashion.
Unfortunately, there's a little too much writing that clubs the viewer over the head, and while it doesn't dilute the message of the film in an overly damaging fashion, it certainly seems that the potential for a better picture wasn't fully tapped.

 DVDFanatic Review: Watermelon Man
Jeff Gerber (Godfrey Cambridge) is a white, middle-class loudmouth with a bigoted worldview that he’s not afraid of sharing.
As he comes to realize that people are people regardless of color, he accepts and even mocks the constant harassment in all its varied forms with the same smartass derision he formerly reserved for his bigoted outcries, albeit with a more good-natured and self-aware attitude.
Godfrey’s transition from white man to fl man is seamless and believable, a credit to Van Peebles overarching vision.

Cast: James Coburn, Godfrey Cambridge, Severn Darden, Joan Delaney
This is a world where distinctions between good guys and bad guys are increasingly uncertain, where the response to such ambiguity is the threat of force, even if it undermines the very identities you're trying to rescue from doubt.
Such uncertainty is clear in the movie's neurotic premise, in which Dr. Sidney Schaefer (James Coburn), a successful Manhattan psychiatrist, is recruited by "CEA" agent Don Masters (Godfrey Cambridge) to minister to the psychological needs of the President of the United States.

Despite some moments that are a bit uncomfortable today, the central theme is a universal and timeless one: the power of empathy.

The picture still carries quite a few laughs, especially through Cambridge's thoroughly entertaining portrayal of the white man in the fl man's skin.
