The progenitor of the Argyllshire Mccullochs was said to be Lulach, son of Gilla Comgan, the Celtic Mormaer, or Earl, of Moray.
Mccullochs witnessed various charters throughout the fourteenth century and Sir Patrick M’Owlache is noted as being restored to his lands in 1363, having previously been forfeited, apparently for allegiance to the English.
It is recorded in 1507 that the Mcculloch chief, in revenge for a raid on the town of Kirkcudbright, ravaged the Isle of Man, then in possession of the Earl of Derby.

The constant feuding in time left the McCulloch family finances in ruin, and it was the misdeeds of William McCulloch from 1592 onwards that eventually led to the mortgaging of the Cardoness estate.
The McCullochs seem not to have recognised this change in their circumstances, for by 1668 they were back at Cardoness (the Gordons preferring to remain in their house near Anwoth, called Bush o’ Bield).
Cardoness is thought to have come into the McCulloch family in 1450, which may well be the date of the present building, and it remained in their hands till 1697 when Sir Godfrey McCulloch was executed in Edinburgh for the murder of Gordon of Bush o'Bield.

Sir Godfrey appears to have taken little part in public life though he was a Commissioner for Supply for Wigtownshire in 1685 and represented the Stewartry of Kircudbrightshire in the Convention of Estates in 1678.
Sir Godfrey was incarcerated in the Tolbooth Prison, to which he was no stranger, having been lodged there some years earlier pending the payment of a fine levied on him in 1668 for his share in his father's persecution of the Gordons.
Sir Godfrey obliged the little man by altering his plan, and the reward came on the day appointed for his execution, when the gnome appeared on a white horse, took McCulloch out of the cart, rode off with him, and neither of the twain was ever seen again.

It is clear that Tory writers on trade, however sensible we may suppose them, could hardly fail to have a partisan bias in favour of liberty of commerce, and that, however clear-sighted they may have been, they were likely to have their insight sharpened by party prejudice.
McCulloch, after characterising North as `the intelligent advocate of all the great principles of commercial freedom,' mentions the disappearance of the tract in such a way as to imply that it was suppressed on account of its free-trade views.
Supposing that the economic consequences of the Revolution would be a victory of the principle of free trade, he published his treatise in 1691; but he was obliged only too soon to yield to the conviction that the result of the Revolution would rather be the extremest intensification of protectionist measures.
