In particular, he refers to a work by Godfried Schalcken, which in the foreground shows a woman with a coy expression wearing a white robe and standing behind her a man with an alarmed expression about to draw his sword.
Schalcken selects a model and undertakes a series of paintings based on classical and mythological subjects which usually feature her partially naked.
Schalcken marries and when he is offered a vast sum to paint a portrait on commission, he agrees to do it.

Schalcken was justly proud of his candlelight scenes.
The Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm purchased several of Schalcken's paintings and it seems that the artist accepted the elector's invitation to work for him at his court in Düsseldorf in 1702.
After his death Schalcken was eagerly collected; most important picture collections formed during the eighteenth century contained some of his pictures.

Godfried Cornelisz. Schalcken, Girl with a Candle
Schalcken was taken as a child to Dordrecht, where he was probably a pupil of Samuel van Hoogstraten.
Much of the rest of his career was spent in Dordrecht until his last years when he lived at The Hague, during which time he made a prolonged visit to London in order to paint the portrait of the Stadholder William who had become king of England in 1689.
Schalcken's fame rests, not on his competent portrait style, but on his painting of night scenes.

A minister's son, Godfried Schalcken first studied with two of Rembrandt van Rijn's students.
The small scale of Schalcken's early work and his careful study of textures, color, and light effects reflect that influence.
Between 1680 and 1690, Schalcken won international fame for his subtle rendering of natural and artificial light.

He was the second son of Cornelis Schalcken from Heusden, a clergyman in Made, and Aletta Lydius, who came from a famous clerical family in Dordrecht.
Like Dou, Schalcken painted small genre pieces with a wealth of painstakingly rendered detail, and his themes and frequent use of artificial lighting are strongly reminiscent of the Leiden master.
Possibly under the influence of Caspar Netscher and Frans van Mieris, Schalcken soon afterwards adopted a freer touch with gentler transitions and a lighter palette and applied himself to painting genre pieces with elegant figures.

 The Annunciation (Getty Museum)
In a rather personal interpretation of the theme, Godfried Schalcken represented Mary as a young Dutch woman in contemporary dress, holding a loose scroll rather than the traditional book.
Schalcken delicately manipulated light and shadow to describe the folds in Gabriel's white gown and the shadows cast by his outstretched right arm and tilted head.
The small size, high degree of finish, and unconventional treatment of the subject matter indicate that the painting was intended for private devotion.

Johannes Rosierse was born in Dordrecht on 11th September 1818, coincidentally close to the home of Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706), the prime exponent of candlelit paintings and nocturnal scenes of the seventeenth century.
He was a painter of figures, interiors and market scenes, but it is as a painter of these subjects by lamplight or candlelight that he is renowned.
He is likely to have seen and studied the work of Schalcken in Dordrecht and so to have adopted this genre.
