Godmanchester is an ancient borough and parish in the hundred of Toseland, situated on the southern bank of the Ouse, which is crossed by a bridge and short causeway, forming a communication with Huntingdon, to which town it may be considered a suburb.
Godmanchester was incorporated in 1605, and its government vested in two bailiffs and twelve assistants, with a recorder, andc.
The new municipal act recognizes it as a borough, and adds four aldermen to the corporate body, which it styles ‘the bailiffs, assistants and commonalty of the borough of Godmanchester.’ A court of pleas, for the recovery of debts under forty shillings, is held every three weeks.

Godmanchester is a small town in England, immediately south of the larger town of Huntingdon on the southern bank of the River Great Ouse.
In contrast to Huntingdon, there have been vast amounts of archaeological finds in the centre of Godmanchester, which has two conservation areas with a large number of timber-framed Tudor houses, the largest being Tudor Farm, dating from 1600 and restored in 1995.
Between Godmanchester, Huntingdon and Brampton lies England's largest meadow, Portholme, which remains an important flood plain but which has served as a horse race course and centre for early aviation.

GODMANCHESTER, a corporate town and parish in the hundred of TOSELAND, county of HUNTINGDON, ¾ of a mile (S.E. by S.) from Huntingdon, containing 1953 inhabitants.
The town, situated on the banks of the Ouse, over which there is a bridge, is supposed to occupy the site of the Roman station Durolipons, and Roman coins have frequently been dug up in the neighbourhood.
A free grammar school was founded by charter of Elizabeth, in 1561, and endowed with landed property at Godmanchester, by Richard Robins, in 1576, but the only funds at present belonging to it are £20 per annum, from Emanuel College, Cambridge.

The only classical geographical work which mentions the Roman name for Godmanchester is the seventh-century Ravenna Cosmology, in which the name Duro viguto (R&C#101) occurs between the entries for Durolitum (near Romford, Greater London) and Durobrivae (Water Newton, Cambridgeshire).
The only epigraphic evidence from Godmanchester recorded in the R.I.B. is an inscribed bronze feather, very likely some sort of votive object, dedicated to a god named Abandinus (vide RIB 230a supra).
Around 6 miles NE from Godmanchester, a branch road off Ermine Street led WNW to Ratae (Leicester) via a possible settlement near Thrapston on the River Nene, and a settlement on the River Welland at Medbourne.
