Gods and Generals by Daniel McCarthy
This is an epic, after all: a film called God and Generals deserves to be seen in a larger-than-life medium.
Gods and Generals would be worth seeing just to see Lang as Stonewall Jackson, and to see Stonewall Jackson done justice on the silver screen.
Some of the fake conservatives who’ve given Gods and Generals its best reviews would prefer to ignore this truth; when they show any sympathy for the South at all, it is only for the soldiers as misguided patriots, men who made a mistake rather than committed a sin or a crime (like treason).

Gods and Generals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gods and Generals is the prequel to Michael Shaara's 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, The Killer Angels (filmed as Gettysburg).
General Hancock, for instance, spends much of the novel dreading the day he will have to fire on his friend in the Confederate Army, "Lo" Armistead.
Gods and Generals is also a movie based on the novel, released on Friday, February 21, 2003, starring Jeff Daniels as Chamberlain and Robert Duvall as Lee.

Rod Dreher on Gods and Generals on National Review Online
Gods and Generals commits the unpardonable sin of depicting the Confederate generals not as prototypes of Goering and Rommel, but as noble, tragic men whose motives for fighting were complex and fully human.
Gods and Generals, which is loosely based on the Jeff Shaara novel of the same name, concerns itself with key battles in Virginia during the first half of the Civil War.
Gods and Generals is filled with challenging theological questions, but the movie appears to have struck historically and theologically illiterate reviewers as showing little more than a bunch of Bible-thumping rednecks sitting around talking about Jesus while fighting to keep the slaves back on the plantation.

Gods and Generals (2003)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Gods and Generals is a rather lengthy, but deserved adaptation of Jeffrey Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Killer Angels”, and a prequel to the equally epic-in-length film, Gettysburg, from 1993.
General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson (Stephen Lang), General Robert E. Lee’s (Robert Duvall) protégé, colleague and most trusted commander, is the major voice for the Confederacy in Gods and Generals, while the Union is epitomized through the exploits and words of Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels).
Gods and Generals is a painfully authentic film that goes to great lengths to present both sides of the story in a historically accurate and authentic manner.

But the central character in "Gods and Generals" is Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang), a teacher at Virginia Military Institute and a religious man with a mystic (some would say fanatical) air about him.
"Gods and Generals" is a prequel to the 1993 film "Gettysburg," also written and directed by Maxwell, which was a better film.
If "Gods and Generals" had been more willing to explore such gray areas, where history doesn't fill in all the gaps, it would have been a more dramatically satisfying movie.

 Gods and Generals
A major difference between the two Civil War works is the handling, by Maxwell, of these dialogue-laden scenes accompanying the dramatic battles of "Gods and Generals." In the earlier film the speeches are used to advance the story, explain the strategies and establish the relationships between the players.
These same kind of speeches are not handled well in "Gods and Generals" with the extended two-player scenes - General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson (Stephen Lang) reciting poetry or the bible to his wife (Kali Rocha), several time, is the principle two shot used far too often - that expostulate on the righteousness of the cause.
"Gods and Generals" is a shallow effort that fails to capture the strategies that Lee, and their masterly execution by Jackson, used to almost succeed in dividing America forever.

Although I was initially disappointed that Warner hadn’t granted 'Gods and Generals' with a high-res audio track, the truth is that the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track (640 kbps) on this disc does a nice job, exhibiting plenty of low-end power that keeps the weighty soundscape rumbling.
Still, overall 'Gods and Generals' is a fantastic audio experience; fans will revel in the powerful bass tones during the film's battle sequences, and only audiophiles will be upset by the slight technical inconsistencies.

Rather than being an actual sequel to Gettysburg, Gods and Generals actually covers much of the same ground, but from different perspectives and points of view, notably that of the legendary General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang) and the events of 1861-1863, leading up to the legendary battle at Gettysburg.
Gods and Generals is directed by Robert F. Maxwell, from the book by Jeff Shaara, features a star-studded supporting cast including Jeff Daniels, Mira Sorvino, Kevin Conway, Bill Campbell, and Robert Duvall as General Robert E. Lee, and clocks in at a staggering 3 hours 40 minutes running time.

Gods and Generals, the prequel to Gettysburg and the first episode in an epic but non-sequential Civil War trilogy, is only slightly shorter than the war itself.
The three main characters here are Chamberlain, a college professor who gave it all up to enlist; Jackson, a religious nut from VMI with a tricked-out beard; and Lee, the US Army vet who found himself caught between country and state (wait, you mean Robert E.
