Originally, I thought this would be a film of gay man versus straight man. It is. But much more than that, it is a film that speaks of human strengths and weaknesses, one that studies with quirky charm and quiet strength the scenario of man versus man.
Without getting maudlin or preachy, "Gods and Monsters" goes about telling its story about ignorance, frailty, and unconditional love, the very themes that ran throughout most of James Whale's life and films.
Eventually, "Gods and Monsters' proves two things: that we are all at once superhuman and sub-human, and that Hollywood can still show this in a beautiful way.

Though definitely not a film for everyone, Gods and Monsters is an excellent character study, speculatively based on the final days in the life of James Whale, the openly gay director of such classic films as Frankenstein.
Gods and Monsters derives its title from a line of dialogue in the Whale-directed classic, Bride of Frankenstein, and is based on the book “Father of Frankenstein” by Christopher Bram.
Gods and Monsters is not an overtly “high impact” film; in many ways it can be seen as small in scale, and it is driven more by character than by action.

Gods and Monsters presents a fictionalized account of the last month of Whale's life, and is replete with flashbacks to his boyhood, his time in the trenches during World War One, and his movie-making heyday.
The "gods and monsters" of the title can have many meanings within the context of this story, but the most apparent is the one relating to the film maker and his creations.
Gods and Monsters is a rich, multi- layered portrait of a director from Hollywood's Golden Age whose own life was as interesting as any of his movies.

A speculative account of Whale's degenerative last year following a debilitating stroke, "Gods and Monsters" is a slow moving, but nearly always captivating guess about what landed the once powerful cinematic force into the swimming pool he himself never used.
Although Condon is obviously more interested in Whale's final year and his fictitious attraction to his young male gardener, such matters would have made the film a bit more interesting and given Whale's character a bit more depth (by exploring in greater detail what helped forge his later years' demeanor).
Even so, the film is an interesting look at the man behind the monsters of his films -- their god if you will, hence one meaning of the title -- and the inner monsters he may have battled throughout his life.

It is psychologically possible to derive comfort from sincere belief in a nonexistent illusion, but - silly me - I thought believers might be disillusioned with an omnipotent being who had just drowned 125,000 innocent people (or an omniscient one who failed to warn them).
My naive guess was that believers might be feeling more inclined to curse their god than pray to him, and maybe there's some dark comfort in that.
A comparison might be made between religion and philosophy, where the latter in Kantian argument states that the existence or non-existence of God cannot be proved by human reason, and that a positive view of noumena cannot be sustained.

Flashbacks to Whale's film-making days are painstakingly authentic (particularly in the casting of look-alike actors playing Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester), and all of these ingredients combine to make Gods and Monsters (executive produced by horror novelist-film maker Clive Barker) a touchingly affectionate film that succeeds on many levels.
