While Godsmack's approach may not be fresh, the foursome's strong songs and powerful energy are still intensely tasty--especially for those with a taste for songs on the sober--but never staid--side.
Godsmack's self-titled debut album from 1998 packs an aggressive set of one dozen emotionally dark songs, whose mournful lyrics sung by the groups powerful vocalist Sully Erna are very expressive.

Alice in Chains is believed to be the primary influence upon Godsmack; it is speculated that the band got their name from an Alice in Chains song of the same name (see below) and started off as a tribute band to Alice in Chains.
Godsmack also released an album titled "Faceless" which is similar in name to Alice in Chains' first album Facelift.
Godsmack's songs "I Stand Alone" and "Straight Out of Line", were used as the theme songs for the 2004 Ubisoft game, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within: In Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, "I Stand Alone" plays without the lyrics when the Prince is being chased by the "Dahaka".

Over the years, Godsmack have also turned into a very good live act, the intensity of their music working well in a live setting, and Erna really showing he's one of the better hard rock frontmen out there.
Godsmack are so earnest, in fact, that they want to prove they're not just another dumb loud rock band, so they've released a new seven-track, 30-minute CD of acoustic songs, which, not so coincidentally, is what Alice in Chains did on their terrific Jar of Flies EP back 10 years ago.
On this CD, though, Godsmack means well, their hearts are in the right places, and it's good of them to try to give their fans a temporary change from the usual fare, but everyone knows that this band is at their best when they're simply a good Big Dumb Rock Band.
