Godzilla's design was inspired by various species of dinosaurs; specifically, he has the body of a Tyrannosaurus, the long arms of an Iguanodon, and the dorsal fins of a Stegosaurus.
Godzilla remains an enduring fictional character beloved by fans worlwide, and is among the few fictional characters granted a Lifetime Achievement Award when he was awarded one by MTV in 1996, becoming the second fictional character (and the first to be completely non-human in nature) to receive it.
Godzilla went on to attack Japan himself, but was stopped when Emmy, one of the Futurians who had turned on her fellows, resurrected Ghidorah as a cyborg, Mecha-King Ghidorah.

Godzilla is experiencing a huge revival these days, especially with the introduction of Roland Emmerich’s new incarnation of the legendary kaiju the Japanese term for giant monster.
The first one, the one that started it all, was "Godzilla, King Of The Monsters", and as the title already suggested at the time, this movie tried to claim the throne of all monster movies and succeeded in doing so.
Godzilla is a creature mutated by the effects of radioactivity from atomic bombs and grown to enormous proportions.

 Movie Review: "Gojira/Godzilla, King of the Monsters"
When Godzilla, King of the Monsters was released in the U.S., the U.S. producers cut out several minutes out of the original Gojira and added in some scenes of Raymond Burr as a reporter who arrives in Japan during Godzilla's first rampage.
Godzilla sinking any ship that crossed his path, razing any buildings within his reach, exploding the ground with his heat beam, and the casualties that came across from his attack all had reflected the physical and emotional damage of the atomic bomb dropped on Japan during World War II.
In Godzilla, King of the Monsters, Dr. Serisawa seems to be percieved as a mad scientist that came up with the destructive oxygen destoryer for no reason.

The US version of the classic 1954 film Godzilla is the best of Classic Media's 2002 releases, although mostly on account of limitations set by the film's original presentation, such as the full screen aspect ratio and the fl and white coloring.
Still, Simitar had previously released a Godzilla King of the Monsters DVD back in 1998, so, naturally, Classic Media's release will unavoidably be stacked up to its predecessor.

This was supposed to be a stand-alone film, Godzilla dies at the end and that is that.
Godzilla roars but it's not the "Godzilla roar" that we are all familiar with.
Godzilla now continues his rampage deeper into the city, blasting entire blocks and even individual police cars with his Atomic Fire Breath and kicking and wailing his tail around.

Well, Godzilla's Revenge might not really count as an official G movie (Godzilla basically only has an extended cameo in it) or a movie at all for that matter (if your definition of "movie" is something that entertains an audience and doesn't make them want to vomit), but that's still a lot.
Godzilla was back to his roots, and everybody pretended that the all the previous movies since the '54 original never really happened.
Well, with Godzilla himself obviously getting sick of the role, and the fact that he fucked all the sisters, mothers and wives of the producers and director and accountants on all his films, everybody at Toho figured it was time to kill the big guy off for good.

The best thing about this film is that at this point Godzilla is still pure evil, interested only in stomping the shit out of Tokyo instead of saving mankind from an endless parade of alien controlled monsters.
Not only is Godzilla an obvious metaphor for a nuclear bomb, but our heroes only manage to stop Godzilla with the Oxygen Destroyer, whose inventor, Dr. Serizawa, is reluctant to use it for fear of the consequences.
Other Godzilla flicks are more b-movie guilty pleasure type viewing, but this one is worth watching both as a historical curiosity and on its merits as a film.

I got to see this on the big screen Friday, and man...just seeing a Godzilla movie projected in massive wide-screen with subtitles in a packed house of people who really care is bliss.
Specifically, Godzilla is, in this version, a manifestation of the souls who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while Mothra, Ghidra and Baragon are ancient guardian spirits of Japan who are called upon to protect the land from Godzilla.
Godzilla is the bad guy here, and it really is pretty dark.

Other than a promo for a Godzilla Gamecube of some type or other, there are no supplements on the disc.
