Bits and pieces of different body parts of Godzilla were shown on TV commercials and posters, but never the entire body; this was to add a bit of mystery as to the design of the creature, ideally prompting people to see the film because that was the only way to see the whole creature.
The American version of Godzilla is shown in a 2006 Doritos commercial, which parodies the bait scene, replacing the tons of fish with a Doritos trailer.
In the film Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah; Giant Monsters All Out Attack, it is mentioned that a creature had attacked New York City and that American officials thought it was Godzilla but the Japanese knew it was not the monster; it is obvious that they are referring to TriStar's remake of Godzilla.

However, unlike the first film, where the bombing of Hiroshima (in fact the destruction of all Japan), is represented by Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo at the end of the film, the bombing of Nagasaki is represented by the battle between Godzilla and Angilas in Osaka, about halfway into the film.
While most of Godzilla’s installments after the 1950s did become increasingly juvenile and silly, the first two films (in their original Japanese presentations) are serious films which explore the effects on the Japanese psyche of being the only nation to suffer from nuclear bombing.

All right, so the lack of obviously dubbed dialogue hurts this film almost as much as the terrible performances by its human cast and the emotional and quasi-romantic subplots, but the film still remains something that has a very limited appeal of enjoyment.
Since Godzilla has always had a cult following, and since the cult following has always talked about how Godzilla can be viewed as an allegory of post-World-War-II Japanese history, you can view the American Godzilla in the following frame of mind: Godzilla represents the final step of post-war Japan.
In Godzilla, Japan has exported the terrible product that was the byproduct of hackneyed imagination and America's nuclear waste.

This is without of doubt one of the worst films of the 1990's.
As a big fan of Godzilla, I was so angry when this film turned out to be an insult to the Japanese films.
The film also contains gaping plot holes, dreadful dialogue, one-dimesnsional human characters that you don't care for, and the acting (apart from Jean Reno as the stern French spy) is downright bad.

In attempting to graft Godzilla into an American idiom (more akin to The Beast From 2000 Fathoms than Godzilla in actual fact), Emmerich and Devlin spend an enormous amount of time aping their idols (throw in James Cameron here, too).
This may very well be the first movie in history that will look better on video than it ever did on the big screen because there are so many prints struck from the negative that care in striking them is nowhere in evidence.
If anything is important to the plot, it gets filmed in a medium two shot at the center of the screen.

Although it's really a long way off being a quality movie, Godzilla has elements to commend, especially if you're a fan of monsters movies in the first place.
As for the special effects, sometimes they're ropey, sometimes they're dramatic (one striking scene has helicopters chasing Godzilla down Manhattan's canyon-like streets), but the argument of whether they can match the charm of the Japanese man-in-a-rubber-suit is moot.
"I like the old martial films for their originality like A Chinese Ghost Story." Recommend a martial arts film to fellow fight fans.
