HEDORAH (1971) was originally given a major U.S. release by AIP (on an infamous double bill with FROGS), under the title GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER.
Although there is the common cute kid who adores Godzilla, the film has such mature sights as a small baby drowning in sludge, a construction worker having his face crisped, and the very violent fighting between the monsters, with lots of muck and unidentified Hedorah innards being tossed around.
Godzilla and his buddy Anguirus apparently can cross communicate, but in the English dub of the film, they are actually heard talking to each other in ridiculous grunting voices in some jaw-dropping, hilarious scenes.

Godzilla (or Gojira, ゴジラ) is a kaiju (strange beast or monster), or more specifically daikaiju (giant monster), in a series of films made in Japan.
Godzilla is believed to have originally been intended by Toho to represent the United States of America (being superior in its destructive capability) and took the form of a radioactive prehistoric reptile.
Godzilla was originally an allegory for the effects of the hydrogen bomb, and the unintended consequences that such weapons might have on our world.

dOc DVD Review: Godzilla vs. Hedorah (Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster) (1971) - Printable
Hedorah itself is an unusual creation, a tentacled heap of goo given to hurling globs of acidic muck at Godzilla and others (humans are badly scarred or reduced to skeletons, in sequences that will probably be too much for younger or more sensitive viewers).
Hedorah is a tough foe, though, and Godzilla spends much of the time smoldering from the acidic aftereffects of the creature.
Godzilla himself is entertaining as always, with the added quirk of using his radioactive breath to propel himself around à la Gamera: yes, Godzilla learns to fly in this infamous sequence.

GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER is dark, almost TOO dark at times, but it is also this approach that makes the film all the more interesting for longtime fans of the reptilian crusader Godzilla.
Hedorah crashes the dance, oozing down a stairwell, and when it pulls away, a living cat is revealed from under the slime.
Hedorah by this point, has assumed the form of a gigantic humanoid creature who towers over Godzilla and attacks with a laser beam shot from its eyes.

Hedorah, obviously, is one of my favorite kaiju, and I am heavily in favor of bringing him back in a modern movie.
Godzilla Vs. Hedorah is, for the most part, a very serious film, with the threat of pollution destroying the world, and the hideous results of Hedorah's poison gas.
However, this is offset by the Godzilla flight scene, which will no doubt delight some, and the parts where Godzilla 'saves' the children on the hill.

However, Tomoyuki Tanaka, who was hospitalized during the production of Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), was extremely dissatisfied with the final product and went as far as to tell Banno that he had "ruined Godzilla!" So Tanaka immediately barred Banno from making another Godzilla film.
According to Banno though, from later interviews conducted with him, Godzilla vs. Hedorah 2 was actually still being worked on after he was removed from the project.

So it is little wonder that the monster-turned-defender-of-Japan Godzilla would come to the rescue in this uncharacteristically socially conscious entry in the endless series.
A big ol' pile of sludge emerges from the sea, mutating from a ground-crawling blob to a flying menace that the Japanese dub Hedorah: this is a monster built on industrial slime and pollution, growing larger and more menacing as it sucks up noxious smokestack fumes.
But Hedorah is more than just unsightly: it spews forth mist of sulfuric acid that instantly kills all who come in contact with it, and splatters his enemies and armies with acidic muck (I never thought I would have call to use the term "acidic muck" on this site!).

DVD Verdict Review - Godzilla Vs. Hedorah
The first encounter is won by our radioactive hero, but as Hedorah continues to feed upon gunk and grow ever bigger, he gains the upper hand on Godzilla via a barrage of acidic sludge attacks, noxious vapor sprays, and an unexpected laser weapon.
Earlier in the picture, however, it seems there were two slightly smaller (yet still monstrous-sized) Hedorahs, one that slithered about along the industrial coast and another that flew about the city proper; these ultimately joined to form the larger monster that Godzilla battles to save Japan.
Godzilla is presented in the classic design (this one a bit trimmer than earlier versions) and portrayed by Haruo Nakajima.

Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, continues to stand as the most famous figure in the history of dai kaiju eiga (Japanese for “giant monster movies”), as his only real rivals in this area are King Kong and Gamera, although Mothra also made a foray into a solo film series.
Godzilla's formidable image is currently being featured on a new American commercial...though this usage of the Big G is rather, um...ignominious.
For example, "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" is the American version of the 1966 G-film, but its international title is "Ebirah: Horror of the Deep." As another example, "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster" and "Godzilla vs. Hedora" are the American and international versions of the same film respectively.

Godzilla is a good guy in this one and none of the other monsters like his giant pet Anguirus, but that's OK because Hedorah goes through several phases of growth while the scientist and his son try to figure out where Hedorah came from and what his weaknesses may be.
Having a monster with three distinct physical forms makes up for the fact that there is only one, despite the fact audiences have become accustomed by now at having as many monsters in each film as possible.

In this movie though, Godzilla somehow manages to fly backwards through the air by firing his radioactive halitosis in the opposite direction.
Though we would never hear from the director or Hedorah again, surprisingly this movie turned out to be the big break for the guy inside the Hedorah suit as he went on to play Gigan twice before getting called up to the big leagues and stepping into the Godzilla suit in seven movies!
