The king of these cheap movies was the king of the monsters, Godzilla, and I always thought I had struck it rich when one of those bad boys rolled into town for a Saturday afternoon.
So I saw Godzilla vs. Gigan and then Godzilla on Monster Island and thought that they were fairly derivative of one another, but never quite caught that they had simply switched movie posters on me.
This is a pretty brutal bout with Godzilla slamming that poor little loser to the ground again and again with his tail and eventually he breaks Anguirus' jaw, blood spewing all over, leaving Ang to limp away all confused, his ripped up jaw dragging the in the dirt.

Although there is the common cute kid who adores Godzilla, the film has such mature sights as a small baby drowning in sludge, a construction worker having his face crisped, and the very violent fighting between the monsters, with lots of muck and unidentified Hedorah innards being tossed around.
Most of the monster action here is saved for the ending of the film, but their clash in Tokyo Bay makes for a pretty awesome spectacle, with Godzilla really taking a beating before emerging triumphant.
Godzilla and his buddy Anguirus apparently can cross communicate, but in the English dub of the film, they are actually heard talking to each other in ridiculous grunting voices in some jaw-dropping, hilarious scenes.

Commonly know as the "Godzilla vs. Monster X" period, this time span consists entirely of formula movies.
In the better part of these movies, Godzilla, with or without the help of one of his friends, beats the tar out of a monster invading earth (frequently controlled by space aliens).
These movies are the true classics (aside from the first), a bit cheesy, but fun to watch once you accept the lack or realism.

In other Godzilla news Midnight Eye is currently running an interview with director Ryuhei Kitamura which both drops interesting tidbits - like long-time collaborator Tak Sakaguchi being employed as action director for Godzilla - while also generally confirming my overall opinion that the man is maddeningly undisciplined.
Godzilla 98 does not even count as a Godzilla movie (as a Generic monster movie it was O.k) My favorites Monsters are Godzilla of course King Gihidrah, Evil mecha-Godzilla, Destroyah, Rodan, Mothra, Mecha King Gihidrah, Orga,King seesar, Gigan, Anguirus Space-Godzilla.
Monster X is a fl boney-looking space monster that turns into a super evil looking Kaiser Ghidorah.
