Gohonzon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Moji-mandala Gohonzon is the primary object of devotion in Nichiren Shu and some other Nichiren schools, and the exclusive object of veneration in the Nichiren Shoshu branch and formerly affiliated groups such as Sōka Gakkai.
Gohonzons are almost always dated and have a dedication, sometimes naming the person for whom or purpose for which they were inscribed or even the person who asked for their inscription.
Gohonzons inscribed by Nichiren's successors differ somewhat depending on the school because of differences in interpretation of the significance of the Gohonzon.

Buddhism - The Gohonzon - SGI UK Website
He inscribed the Gohonzon for individuals so that they would have a constant reminder of the eternal law, the cause for this life state, and which would serve as a focus for their daily practice, as well as functioning as the external cause for drawing out Buddhahood and revealing their greater self.
The Gohonzon is sometimes described as a 'mandala', a word used in the East to describe an object in which Buddhas and bodhisattvas are depicted or on which a philosophical doctrine is expressed.
The Gohonzon is described as a clear mirror which shows the law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and all its manifestations in the different life states, revealing their enlightened qualities.

 The Gohonzon
The significance of the object of devotion-the Gohonzon-in the practice of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, lies not in the literal meaning of the characters but in the fact that it embodies the life of the original Buddha, or the law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
The Gohonzon, in a sense, can be compared to a map pointing to the location of the supreme treasure of life and the universe-the Mystic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
The Gohonzon itself is the world of Buddhahood in which all the other worlds are represented.

Gohonzon is the object of devotion in Nichiren Buddhism.
In the Gohonzon, a scroll on which are written Chinese and Sanskrit characters, Nichiren symbolically depicted the life state of Buddhahood, which all people possess.
The Gohonzon, together with a practitioner's faith and chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, acts as a stimulus to activate the life-condition of Buddhahood innate in one's life.

SHODAI Shodai (chanting of daimoku or Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon) is the essential practice in Nichiren Shoshu faith.
The original purpose of chanting daimoku to the Gohonzon is Kyochi-myogo2 with the Gohonzon which activates one's Buddha nature; this is what is meant by the Daishonin when he refers to "Kanjin no Honzon" (The object of worship to observe one's heart and mine).
When you place credence in the Gohonzon and chant daimoku, the ten worlds within the Gohonzon become the ten worlds within 'to observe one's own mind." 'Shin-gyo-gushoku' means faith and practice are mutually inclusive; faith is contained in practice and practice is contained in faith.

 Meaning
He inscribed the true object of worship, the Gohonzon, for the observation of one's mind and established the invocation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as the universal practice to attain enlightenment.
Also inscribed on the Gohonzon is a declaration by the Daishonin that reads, "Never in the 2,230 years since the passing of the Buddha has this great mandala appeared in the world" (No. 32).
Demonstrating the law of causality on the Gohonzon are the two Buddhist promises-"Those who make offerings will gain good fortune surpassing the ten honorable titles [of the Buddha]" (No. 5) and "Those who vex and trouble [the practitioners of the Law will have their heads split into seven pieces" (No. 12).

On the other hand, if I follow the sutra and do not give her a Gohonzon because of her lack of faith, I will not be partial, but she may well harbor a grudge against me because she does not realize her fault.

Yes...and you'll know that's true if you read and consider that the Gohonzon is only to be found within the faith and life of an individual who embraces the Law.

Where is Nichiren's Reference to the Dai Gohonzon?
According to Nichiren Shoshu lore, Nichiren inscribed the Dai Gohonzon on October 12, 1279 in response to reports that his followers in the Atsuhara village of Japan, who were facing severe religious persecution by their local government, were willing to give their lives if necessary for the sake of their Buddhist faith.
According to the WND editors, Nichiren inscribed the Dai Gohonzon because he saw that "his followers were now ready to give their lives if necessary to protect the Law" (ibid).
The background information accompanying this letter (ibid) states that Nichiren inscribed the Dai Gohonzon in response to reports that his followers in Atusuhara were prepared to sacrifice their lives for the sake of the Buddhist teaching he propagated.

Questions and Answers About the Dai-Gohonzon
The doctrine of Dai-Gohonzon as a Gohonzon for all humanity is directly opposed to the basic beliefs of many people, whose object of veneration is Shakyamuni's statue, or a combination of mandalas and statue.
This is in direct conflict with the doctrine of Gohonzon as the only Object of Veneration, and it is not difficult to understand the reason behind the opposition against the doctrine of Gohonzon for all humanity, or Dai-Gohonzon.
It is evident that a Gohonzon for all people, priests and laity, or a Dai-Gohonzon for all humanity, is a doctrine which upsets the arbitrarily established views of various Nichiren schools.

The word "Gohonzon" is used interchangeably with "mandala" and this is a mistake.
The mandalas represent the Gohonzon (as do various other depictions like portraits or statues) but the Gohonzon is not an object that can be given or received and as far as I am concerned anyone who objectifies the Gohonzon is not practicing Buddha Dharma in any meaninfgul sense of the word.
So the Gohonzon is the coming together of the Truth, the Wisdom which realizes it, and the Compassionate activity which shares it and actualizes it in others.

In the Buddhism of Nichiren (1222--1282) and the tradition from which it draws, this is called the practice of "observing the mind." The difficulty of achieving this is such that practitioners had traditionally to devote their lives exclusively to meditative practice.
Nichiren's contribution was to establish a clear mirror, the Gohonzon, which perfectly reflects the state of Buddhahood inherent in life, and which could thus enable all people, regardless of their circumstances or ability, to draw out and manifest this Buddha nature.
The Gohonzon is an embodiment of a belief in the unlimited potential of life.

Under the doctrine of Nichiren Shoshu, a large paper Gohonzon must be inscribed by the High Priest of Tai-seki Temple because he is the only Kechi-myaku (Direct Inheritors) of the 'True Law' of Nichiren and Nikko.
Other Nichiren sects say that treating a paper Gohonzon as an object of worship for individual followers is a tradition rather than a rule because Nichiren followers were subject to constant conflicts with Buddhists from other sects and a paper Gohonzon could be rolled up and brought to safety in times of emergency.
The paper Gohonzon that Soka confers is a reproduction of another paper Gohonzon inscribed by the 26th High Priest, Nichikan.
