It is on the face of it nonsensical and insulting to the memory of those who died on Sept. 11 to declare that this unprecedented attack did not rise to the level of a historical event.
But the way in which I used the word history, or rather History, was different: It referred to the progress of mankind over the centuries toward modernity, characterized by institutions like liberal democracy and capitalism.
My observation, made back in 1989 on the eve of the collapse of communism, was that this evolutionary process did seem to be bringing ever larger parts of the world toward modernity.

The songs in Going My Way are in no way idiosyncratic; they are wholly within the Tin Pan Alley tradition which dominated American popular music down to the revolution of rock 'n' roll.
Building in any successful rock 'n' roll record is a sense of the power of the singer to say what he or she means, but also a realization that the words are inadequate to that task, and the feeling of fulfillment is never as strong as the feeling of frustration....
The mystery evoked is a self, the Whatever-It-Is that is "going your own way." The rock n' roll self is not the moral self which is always beyond itself, deferring the present for the future, weighing and assessing the course of action.

Going My Way is a 1944 Bing Crosby classic where he played benevolent Father O’Malley who did not abuse anyone but saved a convent from debt.
After Moses tried to hide the work of his flesh, God allowed it to be exposed to show Moses that by doing things his way, he couldn’t keep a single soldier buried in sand, but was banished to the backside of the Midian desert for 40 years.
But by doing things God’s way with his shepherd’s staff, he was able to part the Red Sea, deliver Israel from destruction and bury the entire Egyptian army including Pharaoh with chariots, horses and all.
