The name Gojushiho means "54 Steps" or "54 Directions." Like Nijushiho, Seipai, Seishan, and other kata, this is another one that has a number for a name.
Gojushiho Dai and Sho are believed to have been created by Matsumura Sokon, the great kata creator and modifier who supposedly grew up with Sakugawa in Tomari City.
Although not enjoying the limelight that Sochin and Unsu are right now, Gojushiho Dai and Sho are regularly seen at tournaments, and they often capture very high level awards in kata competition.

Gojushiho was originally known as Useshi and is considered the most advanced Shotokan kata as well as one of the most advanced Shorin-ryu kata.
Gojushiho is referenced in the Chapters 28 and 29 of the Bubishi: Martial Art Spirit, the Okinawan secret text translated and edited by George W. Alexander and Ken Penland.
Gojushiho is said to be one of the oldest Okinawan kata dating possibly to the 1600's according to Sensei George Alexander.

There is a Sho and a Dai version of the Gojushiho Kata.
They are much more closely related to each other than other Dai and Sho Kata (Bassai and Kanku) being virtually identical to each other, with only a few different techniques within each to differentiate one from the other.
The Gojushiho Kata are quite long and are usually only taught to more experienced Karateka as they are reasonably difficult.

Some sources contend that Gojushiho is actually a modified form of an ancient royal dance.
There may be some truth to this belief, considering that many Okinawan Karate experts used to disguise their kata by incorporating them into dances to avoid detection by the ruling forces of the day.

Supposedly, Gojushiho Dai and Sho are what they are today becasue of a mistake made in a tournament in the 1970s.
From what I have read, Yahara sensei, then 6th Dan, annnounced that he was going to do Gojushiho Dai and proceeded to do Gojushiho Sho.
Be that as it may, in Chidokan and SKI Dai and Sho versions of Gojushiho are the opposite of what they are in JKA Shotokan.

Usually the 5 heians, Tekki shodan, Bassi Dai, and Jion, Empi,Kanku Dai are needed for shodan.
You will also need the required kumite and kihon as well.
