Topic: Gokayama

JapanCorner - The Benihana Guide to Japan
Nestled in the mountains between Toyama and Gifu prefectures, are the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama.
Because the region is snow bound for about half the year, the farmhouses were bigger than most in Japan having been designed to accommodate living, working and storage areas as well as large extended families which were necessary for the labor-intensive work involved in sericulture.
Local residents, many of whom are descendants of the Taira clan, live in adjacent towns and are directly involved in protecting and maintaining the historic villages as well as the surrounding landscape.

Shirakawa-go and Gokayama villages in Gifu prefecture, Japan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are slowly gaining fame thoughout Japan and the world as the home to a unique, and until recently under publicised part of Japan's culture.
Located deep in the mountains of northern Gifu and Toyama prefectures, the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama districts were cut off from the rest of Japanese society because of their extremely isolated location in remote mountain valleys, and as such developed a very unique culture and lifestyle different from any other area of Japan.
German architect Bruno Taut is said to have found Gokayama during his travels through Japan in 1939, and introduced it to the rest of the world.

The remote mountain villages of gassho-style houses in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama on the Hida Highlands were registered as cultural heritage sites in 1995.
The scenery of the mountain villages blending in with the nature of each season - fresh green leaves in spring, tinted leaves in autumn, winter snow - and the atmosphere of the villages with traditional houses standing side by side looks just like a fairy tale.
In Gokayama, we recommend a visit to "Ainokura Village" where 24 houses stand against a background of mountains, and "Suganuma village" with 9 houses including 2 that were built during the Edo era.
