In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

gokudo is not likeable at all, and the way in which he stumbles across the fruit salad of a plot is quite a marvel to behold since anyone in their right mind can see that even in the most extraordinary circumstances, no character could get away with what he does.
Gokudo is a not so intelligent and has the worst habits that u can or can not imagine, you maybe disgusted with his indecent ways such as: nose-picking, ear-picking, pick pocketing, coning, farting and is totally arrogent but you come to forgive him for the halarious outcome.
Gokudo is a suprisingly amusing 26 episode stunt with the sole purpose of giving the middle finger to any and all forms of organizes religion.

Gokudo, on the left, is dubbed "The Worst Hero."
Gokudo is probably "The Worst Hero" because he seems to have severe psychological problems, not to mention the fact that this "hero" has a propensity for nose-picking, ear-picking and pick pocketing.
Gokudo and his friends pretty much spend the entire series bumbling from crisis to crisis, screaming all the way, and making us laugh while doing it.

 AAW: Gokudo Review
Gokudo takes a consummate fantasy yarn, replete with captive princesses and legends, and strips it of every shred of seriousness, logic, and decency.
Sending up religion as brutally as Gokudo does takes some guts, although for the most part the religious themes are just another form of legend used as a springboard for all manner of wild hijinks.
Gokudo the man is a marvel of a character, the antihero to end all anti-heroes.

DVD Times - Gokudo (Volume 4: Witches Extraordinaire)
However, before Gokudo can really get his fill of teasing her, they are struck by the disturbing realisation that the witch sisters have in fact imprisoned them and shrunk them down to doll size...
Using Gokudo (in the pop star persona of Gon-Gon) as bait, the gang manages to infiltrate the secret monkey encampment ruled by Gokuu (or, as is currently the case, Niari - who has been unable to escape the watchful eye of Gokuu's gorilla-esque, shrewish wife).
The VA playing the English version of Gokudo is still great, and so is the woman playing Rubette, but their performances aren't enough to counteract some of the other goofy voices on the dub, so I'd personally recommend watching these episodes in the original Japanese.

By the end of the first story arc, Gokudo has been surrounded by beautiful women, turned into one himself, found and lost a fortune, rescued the innkeeper's daughter, lost her to a rival suitor, overthrown a king, been named king himself, abdicated, found his lost family, gave them up, and gave up on them.
By the third episode, Gokudo is surrounded by a large cast of characters, not all of whom are assets to the show.
Taking Djinn's place as Gokudo's travel partner is the obnoxiously off-putting Rubette, she of the "everyday is a bad hair day." She's mysteriously absent from the show by the fifth episode, so one can hold out hope that Gokudo will find another adventure buddy, though her presence in the opening credits suggests otherwise.

DVD Times - Gokudo (Volume 1: Swordsman Extraordinaire)
Not only does Gokudo seem to delight in laying waste to every sacred cow of the standard epic fantasy genre (whereas Slayers spends much of its time pursuing a serious fantasy backstory), but Lina Inverse is not all that bad a person, despite her temper and her gluttony.
Gokudo promptly wishes for fame, gold, and 'hot babes', which only results in the genie launching into a moral lecture about the human condition and why the former shouldn't squander his wishes on such base desires.
Gokudo is presented in its original TV aspect ratio of 4:3, and there's nothing wrong with the picture quality on this disc.

Gokudo is a great story and will keep you on your toes with laughs.
All they need to do is deal with the fact that their bodies and souls are still swapped around, Panda is giving birth to the monkey god, Goku, Jiki has become a turtle, the witch sisters have become snakes, and everyone has been recruited by the demon Ikkyu to be in a pop band.
After that little escapade, Gokudo and company are set to face off with the nagging demon Granny, who's been tormenting for their long journey.

Hell, in the first scene of the first episode on this DVD, Gokudo laughs at the crusty old fortune teller who's trying to rope him into saving the kingdom, then robs her blind and vamooses.

I think we should stop Gokudo (although not necessarily next week or so) and for those who really wish to finish it, to do so during marathon sessions at social nights.
We can't finish Gokudo during the year normally anyway, so rotating shows and finishing up the popular/liked shows during social nights keeps the content during regular meetings fresh(always good to have novelty and variety, ya know), and also encourages people who want to finish the series to come to social night.
Gokudo was funny, but not the kind of show I'm going to worry about watching one way or another (just a matter of taste, not a shot at the show itself or anyone who likes it).

 Gokudo, Swodsman Extrordinaire 1
"Gokudo, Swordsman Extraordinaire" takes a common anime formula -- small band of attractive, talented young people takes on the world -- and tries to add a new twist: the leader of the gang is a selfish, greedy, lecherous boor.
While Gokudo's unique approach to handling the Forces of Evil is refreshing at first, it got old for me pretty quickly.
So, to summarize, "Gokudo" dares to be different, and succeeds in intriguing me enough that I would happily rent the next disc in the series.

Gokudo stumbles into all sorts of situations that result in another episode and it seems perfectly natural.
Inuyasha's plot is quite similar to Gokudo's in the "there is no plot" and "what little plot there is is quite weak and remarkably horrific" department but I think that was unintentional.
I'd advise potential viewers to simply stop watching after the wig incident and pretend that Gokudo's nudity sends everyone into a spontaneous coma, at which point Gokudo decides to grab female Djinn (he ain't gettin' rid of her until he gets his last wish!) and continue his eternal search of money, fame and hot babes.

Now that everyone is more-or-less back to normal, except for the much set-upon Gokudo, the group regains much of the relaxed, dysfunctional chemistry that made the middle parts of the series such a joy to watch.
The story is not quite over yet, though, as the final episode takes Gokudo and Rubette back to Eshalotto, their homeland from the first story arc, and attempts to tie up several of the loose ends from the series, including the secret behind the old hag who is the queen of the Magic World.
Gokudo is perhaps burdened by its slightly low animation quality and its lack of star power, but don’t let that dissuade you.

And the world itself is almost as weird as he is. Basically this show is full of energy, weirdness and humor as it takes the standard elements of fantasy and, well, messes with it.
It's not deep, it's not subtle (indeed Gokudo is almost painfully loud) and the humor is not too complex but it does seem to work.
Gokudo's certainly not going to take them seriously, but the interaction between the serious and his response to it is another rich source of energy, action and humor.

THEM Anime Reviews 4.0 - Gokudo
See, there's this guy named Gokudo, and since this show follows his exploits (for lack of a better term), you'd think he'd be the hero.
Actually, Gokudo is a goofy, hectic, and eclectic bit of anime that, while not for everyone, is certainly interesting and entertaining, which is more than can be said about other titles out there.
Anything that could have remotely posed a challenge to the animators is omitted by a very convenient (but very cute) bunny girl scene-changer, which is kind of a gag in itself (though not quite as cool as Haunted Junction's wipe scenes).

 Full Metal Gokudo - MJSimpson.co.uk
One thing that sets Full Metal Gokudo aside from similar films is that the cyborg is created from two people, and Tosa’s heart affects its actions as much as Hagane’s head.
It’s not quite an All of Me situation, but ‘Hagane’ has flashbacks to aspects of Tosa’s life, and it is ironically highlighted in Yukari’s tearful goodbye letter to him, explaining that she cannot love two men at once.
Full Metal Gokudo (or Full Metal Yakuza, as it is called on this release) is an odd film, a mixture of violence, bonkers B-movie sci-fi and patches of unsubtle comedy (the actor playing Hagane tends to gurn when called on to play any extreme of emotion).

Gokudo is unabashedly an anti-hero, all right, and so one gets the impression that we're not supposed to identify with him.
The story is divided into five "parts": In the first, Gokudo is sent to rescue a damsel from a castle with the promises of a rich reward and the life of a king as the prize.
While GOKUDO may probably wallow in the shadow of other shows of its kind (namely, of course, SLAYERS), those who give it a try will find it to be deliciously silly, zany, laugh-out loud fun.

Previously unreleased in the West, ArtsMagic recently released this film in Region 2 DVD (Feb 21, 2004) via its UK distribution (http://www.artsmagic.co.uk) and is set to release a Region 1 DVD in May 2004 through its newly developed US distribution entity (http://www.artsmagicdvd.com).
Following cult success of his earlier video productions (such as Full Metal Gokudo), Miike was later given larger budgets to create theatrical releases such as Dead or Alive, Ichii the Killer, etc. Thus everyone with eyeballs can discern the difference in budgets used for these films.
But comparing films solely by budget is actually quite useless to anyone interested in Japanese cinematic genre or niches, unless one simply disregards the formative years of most if not all prominent directors.

Gokudo is consummate fantasy stripped of every shred of seriousness, logic, and decency.
Cartoony, slaphappy, nonsensical, hyperactive, relentlessly malicious, and so stupid it hurts, Gokudo is annoying from minute one, yet absolutely hilarious--the title character is the ultimate anti-hero, putting self gratification above absolutely everything else and stubbornly refusing to ever have a change of heart.
Aside from moments bordering on demented genius, it also stands out for its relentless and merciless parodies of every classic legend and world religion you can think of.
