Joe Gold started his first gym in 1965 in Venice, California.
Joe ran Gold's Gym from 1965 to 1970, then sold it and re-joined the merchant marine, which he had originally joined after leaving the navy following World War Two.
In 1977, after the documentary "Pumping Iron", featuring Gold's Gym, was successful, Gold got back into the gym business, starting World Gym, which, while not as big as Gold's Gym, still did pretty well.
