In early 1933, Warner Bros issued a press release promising that the studio would release only two musicals in the coming months; it seems almost as if they anticipated a critical more than a public backlash.
Warner Bros' strategy for Gold Diggers of 1933 wasn't particularly inventive nor was it a major financial risk: they simply remade one of their most successful musicals but at a modest cost.
I watched the whole BB box set earlier this year, and 'Gold Diggers of 1933' was far and away my favorite of the bunch.

Gold Diggers of 1933 is an entertaining example of the ‘backstage’ musical where the principal characters are themselves working to put on a musical within the film.
Gold Diggers ends up being an amalgam of escapist entertainment and social commentary, and it shows how these two apparently disparate notions are not mutually exclusive within the film but rather are interlocked, with one often arising from the other.
Additionally, the initial notion of the girls as ‘gold diggers’ winds up being a misconception; only because J. Lawrence and Peabody consider them to be this way do the girls play into their expectations.

For a movie that celebrates chiselers, parasites, and gold diggers, this DVD package is surprisingly generous, an elegant packaging of a musical pioneer.

Coming in between Lloyd Bacon's 42nd Street and Footlight Parade, Mervyn LeRoy's Gold Diggers of 1933 is the second in a trio of hugely successful Warner Bros. backstage musicals.
Released by the studio within the same (eponymous) year, all three are perceived to be part of a return to box-office form for the reputedly ailing song-and-dance genre, and all three showcase numbers “created and directed” (4) by self-taught army-and-Broadway-trained choreographer, Busby Berkeley.
Like many a Warners non-musical film, Gold Diggers of 1933 was one of the studio's few popular filmusicals to openly address, and indeed directly critique, the contemporaneous Great Depression, the socio-economic national catastrophe that supposedly compelled audiences to seek fleeting doses of solace and escapism at inexpensive picture-houses.

You gotta remember the Busby Berkeley spectaculars are still films, and Gold Diggers Of 1933 is primarily an entertainingly dry comedy in the 1930s Hollywood tradition.
But this first in the Gold Diggers series is a Busby Berkeley film.
It being just ahead of 1934's start to the Hays Code censorship, 21st Century audiences still gasp (in delight!) at the barely-there flimsies adorning the chorines of Pettin’ in the Park, even before convenient ‘rain’ causes them to disrobe in silhouette.

This song is hard-hitting and should be as remembered as a symbol of the Depression as "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" is.
The staging of it- the marching which goes from triumphant to tragic, the torchy vocal of Etta Moten (the fl woman sitting in the windowsill), and the pullback shot of everyone coming downstage at the fadeout- is truly spectacular.
Don´t shy away because it was made in 1933.
