The return to gold standard of shortstop Omar Vizquel, older and defensively tighter, highlighted the National League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards announced Wednesday afternoon.
San Francisco's Vizquel earned his 10th career Gold Glove -- with three different teams -- to become the oldest middle infielder ever cited for fielding excellence, headlining the veteran NL team assembled by a vote of managers and coaches.
But at 38, Vizquel is the oldest ever cited in the demanding middle of the infield; Ozzie Smith was 37 in 1992 when he captured the last of his 13 Gold Gloves.

I'd be absolutely amazed to discover that the Gold Glove voters have any of this information at their disposal when making their selections.
There's a very strong tendency for Gold Glove voters to fixate on one guy and keep giving him the award year after year after year, as long as he doesn't get hurt or do anything to make it clear that something has changed.
When the Gold Gloves were announced, Omar Vizquel expressed surprise that (a) he didn't win it again and (b) it wasn't Mike Bordick who got it.

But that does not insure that Rodriguez will be the first player to win a Gold Glove at two different positions because much of the time that award is given solely on reputation: if you win it once then you probably didn't get any worse so you should win it again.
