At the turn of the century, Golden Gate Park was the free Disneyland of its time, with attractions ranging from animals and birds to lush plantings and numerous types of recreational and athletic activities.
Hall considered the park to be a place to enjoy nature without the trappings of the city, a place that did not include a lot of structures, particularly ones that did not contribute to the true park experience.

Inline skating is very big in Golden Gate Park, which in itself serves as a kind of social convergence for experienced skaters along the strip (JFK) with skate dancing, slaloming, etc. In contrast to this relatively 'new' development, Golden Gate Park is a very old park and historical buildings and landmarks are everywhere.
Of all the great open fields in Golden Gate Park, the largest is the central Polo Field meadow bounded by JFK and Middle Dr. It is followed closely by Big Rec Ball Field although weekends will occupy much of the field with ball games as this field supports two baseball diamonds.

 Early History of Golden Gate Park
The park was the outgrowth of the city's legal fight to establish its title to the four square leagues (17,000 acres) orignally granted it under Mexican law, called the Outside Lands, and settled by squatters.
The first Park commissioners appointed William Hammond Hall to survey and prepare maps of the park area, and he was appointed the first Park Superintendent August 14, 1871.
Hall can still be seen and felt in Golden Gate Park because he deliberately designed roads and pathways with curves and bends to discourage fast horse-and-buggy drivers, and to shelter visitors from the wind.

It is on the western end of the park right by the beach.
I do know it started out life as the changing rooms for park visitors who chose to swim in the near by ocean (or to visit the near by beach) The outside is of a neoclasical design.
