Golden flowers adorn this delightful plate by Jorge Quevedo.
Although my family worked in other fields, I was fascinated by ceramics and, while still in high school, I took a job in a pottery workshop.
After several years, I wanted to set up my own ceramics studio, and I saved up until I was finally able.

In 1959 the Shaw Brothers film studio was expanding it's activities in Hong Kong, and Chow saw an opportunity to join the film industry.
Among the first Golden Harvest pictures to be produced from the new studios was The Big Boss, which launched the producerÕs highly successful association with Bruce Lee.
Golden HarvestÕs films with Michael Hui were the vanguard of the re-introduction of Hong Kong films into the vast Japanese market.

Yet, as these series of films had "ran-their-course" and were pretty popular, the director was in debt and would have to return back to Shaw studios in Hong Kong, full-time.

 Mona FONG Yat-wa
This is what likely led Shaw to bring Fong into the studio in the early '70s where she was quickly promoted above other longtime employees including Raymond Chow, the future head of rival studio Golden Harvest.
Filmmakers at the studio soon found Fong to be a highly opinionated, zealously budget conscious and interfering producer, despite having no experience in filmmaking.
Her influence grew in 1988 when she was put in charge of the newly formed Cosmopolitan Film Productions Co., a joint venture between Shaw's movie studio and TVB television company.

man in a rubber godzilla type suit) and its obvious that Golden Harvest were aiming to make a good first impression.
At the time fight choreography was still developing as an artform so may seem a little primitive to today's high standards but I've always enjoyed the energy in these old films.
Despite a couple of cheesy moments (again excusing the lizard man/monster) 'The Angry River' is an enjoyable swordplay film and certainly a good effort for a first feature from the then fledgling studio.

An early hit for Hong Kong action superstar Jackie Chan (and now Hollywood action superstar with the release of Rush Hour), this film was JC's first directorial effort for his new studio, Golden Harvest.
It's a great film to see if you're a fan of Chan's at all; a lot of his filmmaking style and humor are here, as well as a lot of his Chinese Opera School training (I've always thought).
The Young Master is a Golden Harvest film released in Hong Kong in 1980.

Hapkido review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
Although this follows the tried and tested 'rival schools' plotline of many early seventies kung fu movies, the quality and quantity of the fight action lifts 'Hapkido' far above the average and nearly into the realms of classic.
Featuring practically the same cast as Golden Harvest's other Angela Mao-led films of the same era ('When Taekwando Strikes' and 'The Tournament'), this is probably the best in terms of consistency.
The story sees Angela Mao and her companions, Samo Hung and Carter Wong, arrive in China from Korea to establish a Hapkido martial arts school.

Establishing himself with Win's Film Entertainment for a series of high profile efforts with Jet Li (Bodyguard from Beijing, My Father is a Hero), Yuen is finally back with Golden Harvest.
Coming off his success of Hero, this could be the one-two punch that he needs to affirm his talents for a Hollywood breakthrough.

King Hu's The Fate of Lee Khan and The Valiant Ones
The studio would distribute the films but Hu would own the rights to The Valiant Ones while the studio would own The Fate of Lee Khan.
It was said that Golden Harvest opted for The Fate of Lee Khan, which was released in 1973, because they felt it was more commercial than The Valiant Ones.
The Fate of Lee Khan is Hu's only film to feature stars by the brim-full (which is indicative of its intrinsic commercial worth, leading Golden Harvest to retain its ownership of the film).

Although the first stage of the mission to capture the General goes smoothly, the real problem for the group proves to be escaping the country and out-running the vicious armies on their trail.
Review: HEROES SHED NO TEARS was filmed by John Woo way back in 1984 but was shelved by the Golden Harvest Studio who thought that the film - by their top ‘comedy director’ at the time - was too violent.
When A BETTER TOMORROW was a smash hit only two years later HEROES was dusted off of the shelf and released.

In 1993, hoping to improve myself as a fight choreographer, I became Jackie's guest at Golden Harvest's studio two, where he was filming Drunken Master II, the sequel to his now-classic Drunken Master (aka Drunken Monkey).
Thirteen years had passed, during which he had made 30 more films; I wasn't sure what to expect from Jackie.
Jackie is quite proud, however, of his most recent starring role in Crime Story (1993), which earned him a Golden Horse nomination for best dramatic actor.
