 BBC - Radio 4 - Case Notes 17/12/2002
Emergency care around the world is increasingly based on the concept of the “Golden Hour” — the idea that seriously ill patients need urgent care within the first hour after an injury.
Dr Lerner feels it is “crucial for medical researchers to critically examine concepts such as the golden hour that are widely accepted but are in fact not scientifically supported”.
It consists of the recognition of resuscitation and stabilisation of the seriously injured in the pre-hospital care situation and it extends beyond the preservation of life to the prevention of complications and the relief of suffering.

Emergency medicine is a branch of medicine that is practiced in a hospital emergency department, in the field (in a modified form; see EMS), and other locations where initial medical treatment of trauma and illness takes place.
Emergency medicine is oriented to situations in which care is required immediately and does not usually concern itself with long-term care (although, obviously, EM physicians and pre-hospital technicians will do everything they can in their treatment to improve the long-term outcome of a patient).
