Roaring Twenties - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The spirit of the roaring twenties was marked by a general feeling of discontinuity associated with modernity, and a break with traditions.
The Roaring Twenties were traditionally viewed as an era of great economic prosperity driven by the introduction of a wide array of new consumer goods.
Thus, the Roaring Twenties gave a new definition to womanhood—a new woman was born, who smoked and drank in public, danced and exercised her franchise, kept her hair short, wore make-up, dressed differently, and confidently participated in economic activities.

By the time Edison Labs brought Billy Golden into the studios to record this song in 1903, he had already recorded it twice - once for Columbia cylinder in 1898 and again for Berliner disc about a year later - and it was already an established seller.
Billy Golden was one of the first to put "negro songs" to wax (his Columbia cylinder of "Turkey In The Straw" is next in the Archive), and his records were very popular though thoroughly racist by later standards.
The performance is best heard with the full knowledge that this form of entertainment was hugely popular at that time, and is more a reflection of that period of history than of the personal values of the performer.

1920s - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sometimes referred to as the "Jazz Age" or primarily in North America and in Australia as the "Roaring Twenties".
In Europe it is sometimes refered to as the Golden Twenties.
This due to the fact both decades were considered very economically prosperous times, and a prosperity which lasted throughout almost the entire decade following a tremendous event at the closing of the previous decade (World War I and Spanish flu in the late 1910s, and the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s).
