FOOD group Golden Vale is expected to report a recovery in pre-tax profits for 1997 to around £15 million when it announces results on Wednesday, according to analysts.
A strong performance by Golden Vale's cheese operations has prompted several brokerage houses to revise up their forecasts after difficulties at the business help reduce the company's profits to £7.9 million in 1996.
Golden Vale had a difficult year in 1996, when adjusted pre-tax profits dropped to £7.9 million, before a £1.6 million charge, compared with £16 million the previous year.

GOLDEN VALE suppliers, who demonstrated angrily outside the Castletroy Park hotel where the AGM was in progress last week, are waiting to see if an undertaking given on the April milk price will be honoured.
The anger of the protesters outside was reflected at the AGM when the chairman of the Golden Vale plc, Pat McKenna, and another director, Pat O'Brien from Doon, failed to be re-elected onto the board from the floor, and were elected only after proxy votes were included.
"Golden Vale was bottom of the league for February," said one disgruntled Limerick farmer, Fergus McCarthy.

Golden Vale shareholders can either accept an offer of 1.50 euro in cash plus dividends worth 4.26 cents, or one Kerry Group ordinary share for every 10 Golden Vale shares, cash of 13 cents plus the dividends worth 4.26 cents.
The Board of Golden Vale has decided to unanimously recommend this new offer from Kerry, which was announced this evening.
Commenting on the announcement, Golden Vale's Group Managing Director Jim Murphy said the terms are fair and reasonable and offer good value to the company's shareholders.

OnBusiness understands that Golden Vale wants to see an offer of 1.60 euros per share on the table before it will enter into serious discussions with Kerry, after chief executive Jim Murphy dismissed the 1.37 bid as undervaluing the company.
But Gillen says Golden Vale's ability to squeeze the price higher is limited, unless it is able to find another party interested in bidding for the company.

KERRY Group's takeover of Golden Vale has been given the green light by Minister for Trade and Employment and the Group has already assumed the operational responsibility for Golden Vale.
It was announced Friday that the offer was unconditional and that the remaining shareholders in Golden Vale, yet to agree to the Kerry offer, would now receive a Section 204 notice, compelling them to give up their shares.
A letter to the remaining shareholders in Golden Vale will be posted on Friday and the cancellation of Golden Vale listing and trading on both the London Stock Exchange and Irish Stock Exchange is expected by October 26.
