The line diverges from the Great Western Main Line at Swindon, and, (after going through the Sapperton railway tunnel and down the Golden Valley to Stroud), joins the main Bristol to Birmingham main line at Gloucester.
Kemble used to a be a former junction for two branch lines serving Cirencester and Tetbury.
Both of these lines closed in the 1960s and the Swindon-Kemble section of the line was reduced to single track.

Thousands of pioneers passed through the Golden Valley in the spring of 1859, but none stopped to settle, for all were headed for the rich gold in the fields beyond.
Golden was a very busy transportation center for the mining operations which were going on in the mountains to the west.

The N.A.and H. Railway was subsequently absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1863, the line later being jointly owned with the L.M.S.R. The Golden Valley Railway branch line to Hay-on-Wye was opened on 1st September 1881 as far as Dorstone and later extended to Hay.
The Golden Valley branch, which led a precarious existence, closed to passengers on 15th December 1941, and was progressively truncated for freight traffic.
With the cessation of local stopping trains on the main line, passenger services to Pontrilas ceased on 9th June 1958, and the station was closed to goods traffic on 12th October 1964.

Picturesque to a fault is the section of Golden Valley County known as the "Big Coulee Valley." A portion of the country which is situated eight miles south of the little town of Ryegate.
This particular section might have been designed by nature for the home of an exclusive clan, so careful was she to isolate it from the adjoining bench land by large rims that tower for hundreds of feet into the air on either side.
There are a few trees on the rims of the valley and some foliage but these are lost sight of in the fantastic rock formation along both sides of the valley.

On the return however we got as far as Didcot and there we stayed, to be told that due to a fatality at Banbury, the line was blocked.
The run to Swindon provided more 125mph running, but progress along the Golden Valley was slow due to awaiting a FGW HST to clear the single line section, and then some very lengthy TSRs.
Once on the main line again we had a good run, including a cracking climb of Lickey Bank, which we must ahve topped at around the 65 mark I would guess.

I had my first ride on the Golden Valley Railway - and the Midland Railway at Butterley - a little over ten years ago.
Four years ago, I visited the line again (see Dull plains - Golden Valley) - the 2' gauge line had been greatly extended to its present length of nearly 1 mile, down the trackbed of the Butterley Works plateway to the Newlands Inn.
I later realised it was one of the somewhat non-standard units equipped with hydraulic transmission for the St. Pancras - Bedford route - class 127.

Pourchot's decision March 1 came six years after Golden Valley Electric Association applied for the permits to build the 100-mile Healy-to-Fairbanks power line.
The route has been bitterly opposed by environmentalists and others who said the line would disrupt the view and hurt the environment.
The flats are far from untouched by man and the power line would cross less than 1 percent of the flat's 2 million acres, Pourchot said.

The Golden Valley Light Railway is not a preserved railway, in the sense that the route is essentially new, however like other volunteer run railways it is active in preserving our railway heritage.
Newlands Inn is close to the Historic Cromford Canal and it's two mile long tunnel and in fact the railway traverses the bed of the disused reserviour which used to feed this system.
The GVLR was formed on 28th May 1986 as a group of enthusiasts with the aim of building a narrow gauge railway on the site of the Midland Railway Centre.
