At this point, Goldsmiths' College was the largest teacher training institution in the country, and the only one maintained by the University for teaching a two-year certificate of Education course.
In 1947 the College became a Department of the London University Institute of Education; and in 1950, the decision was made that Goldsmiths' College students should no longer read for internal degrees of the University.
The Goldsmiths' College was created a School of the University of London in 1988 (Royal Charter 1989) - though the possibility of a merger with Queen Mary College was mooted and discussed in 1984-1985 - on condition that it did not replicate teaching at other schools, but concentrate on its own specialisms.

The MSc, a one-year full-time or two years part-time taught course at the London college, has already attracted nearly £3m in funding, some of which is being used to build cutting edge digital studios.
Robert Zimmer, head of computing at Goldsmiths, part of the University of London, said: "It's the first course of its kind within the department with such a distinctive application, and will be particularly suitable for those interested in pursuing careers in interdisciplinary research, computing, arts, design, cognition and culture."

Goldsmiths is Agresso’s 23rd higher education client and its 4th managed service customer.
Richard Welch, Goldsmiths’ finance project manager, commented: “A key aim is to improve the efficient running of the College’s finances by changing workflows etc. For example a high priority is to decentralise our purchase order processing and devolve responsibility for managing requisitions down to the departments and AGRESSO will facilitate those changes.”
