IRCS branches in the most affected provinces of Mazandaran, Qazvin, and Teheran were the first to respond with further support in equipment and other resources provided by the IRCS Relief Organization and Semnan, Qom, Gilan, Golestan, Ardabil Kermanshah Zanjan, Markazi Isfahan branches of the IRCS.
The earthquake was felt also in the neighbouring provinces of Tehran, Gilan, Semnan, Golestan, Isfahan, Markazi, Qom and Qazvin.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the earthquake damaged 75 villages in the cities of Noshahr, Chalous and Nour in the Mazandaran province and 42 villages in Alamout region in the Qazvin province.

The soil in the mountainous region of this province, due to the sharp slope of the mountains and the shallow depth of the soil is not very suitable for cultivation.

Mazandaran with an area of 46,500 square kms, is bound on the north by the Caspian sea and Turkmenistan Republic, to the west by Gilan Province, to the south by Provinces of Semnan and Tehran and to the east by Golestan Province.
The capital of Mazandaran Province is Sari and the important cities of the province include Amol, Babol, Sari, Nowshahr, Kelardasht, Behshahr, Qa'emshahr, Noor, Chaloos, Tonekabon and Savadkoo.

Like Mazandaran, Golestan province and its surrounding areas were settled much earlier than Guilan, and the Gorgan plain in particular is believed to contain some of the most important archeological sites (older than 6000 years) in west Asia.
It borders on Tukmanistan Republic to the north, Khorasan province to the east, Semnan province to the south, the Caspian Sea and the Guilan province to the west.
This new province was created as a result of the division of Mazandaran province into two smaller administrative units.
