The Golliwogg (later golliwog) is a rag doll-like, children's literary character created by Florence Kate Upton in the late 19th century.
The Golliwogg was inspired by a flface minstrel doll Upton had as a child in America.
The 1895 book included a character named the "Golliwogg", who was first described as "a horrid sight, the flest gnome", but who quickly turned out to be a friendly character, and is later attributed with a "kind face".

The Golliwogg name was changed to Golliwog, and he became a common toyland character in children's books.

It seems to me that whether the "Golliwogg" is grotesque or not is purely a matter of opinion (as beauty really is in the eye of the beholder!).
The Golliwogg certainly did not have any of these qualities, as he was a mere toy with an adventurous spirit.
The public has a right to reject any rendition of a character that they consider insulting (be it a 'Golliwogg', or anything else), but I hope that groups such ar WREC will change their opinions about the "Golliwogg", once they learn of his true character, originating in Florence Upton's stories.

Although the doll that Florence Kate Upton later named the Golliwogg does not seem to be based specifically upon any one minstrel character, it is not improbable that the “American fair” where Florence got her doll circa 1880 had a minstrel show.

Florence Upton's remark that the Golliwogg was to be the hero of the books is represented in the close relationship and adventures he has with the dolls.
Though the Dutch Dolls took precedence in the title of the first book, from the second book onwards the titles referred only to the Golliwogg as an indication of his being at the centre of the adventures contained within.

The golliwog doll became a popular children's toy throughout most of the 20th century, and was incorporated into many aspects of British commerce and culture; for instance, some of Enid Blyton's books feature them, once as a villain and at other times as heroes.
However, small boys in the 1950s, who would never dream of playing with sissy dolls, had no qualms about a big rag golly and as many golly badges as possible.
