  Golubac fortress Information
Golubac fortress is a medieval fortress located in Golubac, built by Hungarians sometime in the 13th century.
It is strategically placed on the embankment of the Danube river near the entrance to the Đerdap gorge.
The fortress is presently situated between cities of Golubac and Kladovo and is a popular tourist attraction in the region as well as a sightseeing point on popular Danube boat tours.

This is the fortified medieval town of Golubac, built on inaccessible rock above the river Danube, at the point where the riverbed begins to narrow, thus facilitating monitoring of all traffic across and along the Danube.
It is supposed that it was built by Hungarians, probably in the second half of the 13th century, to defend their land on the right bank of the Danube.
Golubac had a tumultuous history: it was in the hands of the Hungarians, of the Turks, and, in the end, in the possession of the Serbian state.

The duty of studying, evaluating, preserving, caring for and improving the monumental heritage in the region around the Danube and Braničevo was assigned in 1981 to the Smederevo Regional Institute for the preservation of cultural monuments.

Golubac from Arilje was bought by Arilje-native businessman from Toronto Vladan Bogdanovic for 28.02 million dinars, who was driven by his wish to bring his two sons and daughter back to Serbia.
Bogdanovic said that the state of the company he bought is chaotic, and he said he plans to make a photographic record of this so that he can show the comparison once the situation stabilizes.

These groups in Golubac required assistance in developing three important conditions (developed through cooperation with Freedom house and Balkan Community Initiative Fund) for assuring the sustainability of citizens’ associations – legal status, service-orientation, and sound internal organization which includes finance management and human resources.
Existing citizens’ boards were formalized, statutes devised and voted on, and service orientation ingrained into the CDA’s mode of operations with the goal of forming a new generation NGO in Golubac that is community-based and membership-driven.

In order to protect the villages and settlements along the river, embankments were raised throughout its flow length.
However, in spite of the additionally put sand bags, the extremely high water level caused flooding of the area along the Danube River in Golubac, including a kindergarten, several apartment buildings, the hotel, the old park, sport and playground fields, and the local community development center, which was reconstructed and equipped within the CRDA-E program.
The equipment provided to Golubac municipality through this project will assist the defense of this municipality from the flooding, and prevent significant material damages, as well as possible losses of human lives.
