Topic: Golwalkar

  Was Guru Golwalkar a Nazi?
Golwalkar neither applauded the fact that Germans were staging a struggle against Jews, nor the German perception of why the Jews were unwelcome to stay, much less the specific methods adopted by the Nazis vis-à-vis the "Jewish question" in any phase of their term in power.
Golwalkar says in so many words, in the very line which is always quoted to prove his Hitlerian leanings, that he wants "the foreign races in Hindusthan" to "adopt the Hindu culture and language" and to "lose their separate existence to merge in the Hindu race".
Golwalkar argues quite correctly that established nations victorious in the Great War do not concede to their ethnic minorities the "minority rights" devised by the League of Nations as binding on the newly created states.

 Disowning Golwalkar’s We
As long as Golwalkar has not been disentangled from this identification with the worst handful of lines in his repertoire, it is most unwise and self-destructive to be seen glorifying him.
The “purge” to which Golwalkar referred, was the progressive exclusion of the Jews from public life and the policy of promoting their emigration.
The attempt to distance Golwalkar from the contents of We by attributing the latter to another Hindutva writer are revelatory for the RSS state of mind regarding this embarrassing heritage.

Golwalkar is the longest serving chief of RSS and also may be the most successful in terms of increasing membership and establishing shakhas.
Golwalkar acclaims Manu as the "first and greatest lawgiver of the world" who "lays down in his code, directing all the peoples of the world to go to Hindusthan to learn their duties at the holy feet of 'eldest born' Brahmins of this land." (Golwalkar, 1939, pp.55-56).
Golwalkar’s solution was simple: either accept his homogenous framework of the nation (Murli Joshi’s Ahemediya Hindus, Christiya Hindus) or remain outside, forever subordinated and at the peril of their extinction.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Madhavrao Sadashiv Golwalkar
True, Golwalkar was imprisoned in the aftermath of the murder and the RSSs temporarily banned, but it was the Maharashtrian revolutionary and Hindu Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966) who was the assassin Nathuram Godse's real ideological inspiration.
Although Golwalkar was exonerated by a commission of inquiry and Savarkar acquitted by the court of actual involvement in the conspiracy, Hindu nationalism has had to live with the stigma of its two leading stalwarts being implicated in the Mahatma's murder.
Golwalkar was a missionary, Savarkar was a visionary.

Golwalkar is credited with not only providing a theoretical background to the project of Hindutva but also carving out a mass base for the project through the unique method of affiliated organisations.
Fondly called Golwalkar Guruji because of his brief stint in Benaras Hindu University as a teacher, he led RSS for an uninterrupted spell of 33 years starting from 1940.
Looking at the key role played by Golwalkar in shaping RSS, it does not look surprising that the Parivar which has of late witnessed fissures of various sorts and is presently passing through a period of disorientation, has decided to celebrate his birth centenary in a big way.

 Sabrang Alert
Golwalkar reveals that when the RSS was given its name some felt it should bear the prefix 'Hindu', not 'Rashtriya', lest its 'doors should have to be left open to all other people in the country.' Hedgewar ridiculed the idea.
On February 6, Golwalkar gave a directive to 'disband the RSS till the ban is there' while 'denying all the charges.' He claimed that the RSS was law-abiding and would 'carry on its activities within the bounds of law.' Golwalkar was released on August 6, 1948 but his movements were restricted to Nagpur.
Golwalkar replied angrily on May 17 claiming that these demands were 'wholly out of place in the matter under consideration', and urging the government to 'recognize the difference between a constitution and an oath of allegiance.' This is highly significant and touches the core of the RSS credo.

Golwalkar and his views have been the target of most criticism from the left which with active support from the mainstream media has been successful in tainting the ideology spawned by him as fascist.
Most of  Golwalkar's speeches were in chaste hindi which straight away puts first hand interpretation out of the reach of most in the english mainstream media and hence most second hand interpretations must be taken with a grain of salt, especially those coming from a left of center persuasion.
Golwalkar then goes on to talk about his concerns with Democracy bereft of values and how it can degenerate into sectarian power politics of the kind we are witnessing today.

Golwalkar was also averse to playing second fiddle to Savarkar, as Hedgewar had been doing.
This could be interpreted as a plea for return to the Golwalkar attitude but the malady is deeper; the fissure is on the basis of Savarkar-Golwalkar antipathy.
That is the crux of the matter-Advani, a Savarkarite, fighting Sudarshan, the follower of Golwalkar.

We are witnessing a concerted attempt by the RSS to establish MS Golwalkar as the 'prophet of resurgent India', 'a saint', 'a new Vivekananda', the best son of Bahratmata', and the 'biggest gift to Hindu society in the 20th Century'.
This in spite of the fact that Golwalkar, throughout his life, remained committed to the concept of Hindutva which meant an inherent faith in Casteism, Racism and Imperialism.
He stood for the establishment of a Hindu rashtra, or nation, where minorities like Muslims and Christians could exist only as second class citizens.

 HIMAL SOUTHASIAN | May - June 2006
Golwalkar was born on 19 February 1906, and 2006 is being celebrated across India to mark his centenary.
Golwalkar emerged as one of a triumvirate of Hindu nationalists – together with Indian nationalists Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Keshav Baliram Hedgewar – which actively sought a Hindu rashtra based on ‘Hindutva’, a term coined by Savarkar in or around 1923.
The period when Golwalkar was anointed Supremo was marked by three worldwide currents: the ascendance of the forces of Nazism and Fascism; the surge in anti-colonial struggle; and the emergence of militant socialist movements in several countries, with help and support from Soviet Russia.
