Gombe State, called the 'Jewel in the Savannah', was formed in October 1996 from part of the old Bauchi State by the Abacha military government.
Gombe state was carved out of the former Bauchi state in the last state creation exercise by the Federal Military Government on 1st October, 1996.

GUSAU, Nigeria (Compass) -- At least five churches were destroyed during February in northern Nigeria as the controversial implementation of Islamic law continued in several states.
On February 24, riots in Gombe town of Gombe state by Muslims primarily from the Shia Islamic sect resulted in two churches being burned and an unknown number of deaths.
Gombe state has continued to experience sharia-induced violence despite assurances by the government that the introduction of the Islamic legal system would not undermine the peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians.

Last month, the WHO said it had received reports of 1,118 cases including 76 deaths of measles in the northeastern Nigerian state of Adamawa since February 28.
