In that way I performed chinkon or Shinto spiritual exercises." Though Reverend Yamamoto clearly identifies the ritual as a "Shinto spiritual exercise" it is worth pointing out that elsewhere in the volume he includes a map of the temple which indicates a Buddhist shrine within the temple precincts.
Yamamoto and Saso go further, noting that the use of the mudra is in the removal of "impurities" (Y) or "thoughts and desires" (S).
This belief in the complementarity of Shinto and Christianity is found in the writings of Reverend Yamamoto, and Nakazono Sensei, referenced herein, and in Dr. Jigohei Tanaka's pamphlet Ko-Shinto and Globe State, which primarily concerns itself with justifying the institution of the royal family in Japan.

She was an old ship - so old, in fact, as to be from another era, if not another epoch.
She had been part of Admiral Gombei Yamamoto's "Six-Six Fleet" that dated to just after the Sino-Japanese War, and when completed by Armstrong, Elswick in 1899 she was one of the finest armored cruisers afloat.
She had served her country well in the following years; among her battle honors were "Tsushima 1905" and "Tsingtao 1914." Converted to a minelayer in 1922, she was still a part of Combined Fleet after more than four decades.

Kaigun : Strategy, Tactics, and Technology in the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1887-1941
The Imperial Navy was fittingly proud of its elite core of naval professionals, which was highly instrumental in allowing the Navy to win two major naval engagements in the first thirty years of its existence.
The careers of prime movers in the Navy such as Togo Heihachiro, Yamamoto Gombei and Sato Tetsutaro are discussed in the book.
However, the presence of the cr??me de la cr??me might have actually blinded the Navy to the fact that its recruitment policies were intrinsically flawed; its elitism allowed it to become complacent and to overlook the need for a sizeable body of naval reservists.
