 Daily Bible Study - Gomorrah
Gomorrah was the name of an ancient city in Judea that is always mentioned in the Holy Bible with Sodom.
The English name Gomorrah is derived from the New Testament Greek name for the city, pronounced gom-or-rah-haw which itself was derived from the more ancient Old Testament Hebrew name for the city, pronounced am-oh-raw which meant a heap, from agricultural usage meaning a heap of grain or a heap of manure.
The location of Gomorrah is thought by many to have been on a plain that is today submerged by the southern half of the Dead Sea (shown in the photo).

 Sulfur and Ash from Gomorrah
We all collected some ash from the mountain slopes which had small sulfur balls in it; Ron Wyatt and his team went up to get better samples, and he kindly brought me a bag of ash with large chunks of sulfur.
This gives the indication that the ash has carbonate, and since limestone (calcium carbonate) is found as rock in many parts including the Gomorrah area, the ash could be mostly limestone; in addition there were some acid insoluble residues which could be silicates.
What I speculate is the following: Sodom and Gomorrah (and three other cities) were destroyed by massive ground eruptions in the valley of Siddim (present Dead Sea).

With Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar, Sodom and Gomorrah formed the five "cities of the plain", all but the last-named of which are said to have been destroyed by brimstone and fire, perhaps accompanied by an earthquake, because of the indecency and perverse sexual practices of their inhabitants.
Later they became prototypes of evil places and there are several tales in the aggadic tradition of the horrible things that occurred there.

The Bible relates that Sodom and Gomorrah were located along with three other cities in the Vale (valley) of Siddom, or the area of the Dead Sea.
The area is extremely arid, and at present does not have the capability, even given present agricultural technology, of supporting more than a small fraction of the population that the numbers in the cemeteries indicate that it once did.
Sanders is right in his mirror city theory, the destruction of the original cities of Sodom and Gomorrah may have occurred sometime between 3200 to 2800 BC (Conventional Chronology) dependent on the accuracy of the investigators and their charts.

"Gomorrah" (titled after a dreary Robert Bork volume from the Regnery Press-happy mid '90s) loosely follows the Seven Deadly Sins, and shows how well-adjusted, law abiding Americans can live at what's considered the "edge" of decency and still live productive lives.
Perhaps it's not that eating or sex or gambling are good or bad in and of themselves, despite what the preachy moralists like Robert Bork (author of "Slouching Towards Gomorrah," which Savage's title plays off of) and William J. Bennett (he of the not-so-little gambling problem himself) would have us believe.

The location of the cities Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the sources of debate among biblical archeologists and geologists alike.
There are those like Ron and Mary Nell Wyatt that believe that Sodom and Gomorrah are located near the Dead Sea and the ruins have been located, while others such as Graham Harris believe the cities were built right at the edge of the sea and the ruins are to be found underwater.
The Wyatts interpretation is that the 5 cities destroyed are spread along the west coast of the Dead Sea.
