Gonâve, Île de la (go-NAHV, EEL duh lah), long narrow island (254 sq mi/658 sq km), belonging to Haiti, in the Gulf of Gonaïves, 32 mi/51 km WNW of Port-au-Prince; 35 mi/56 km long, c.8 mi/12.9 km wide; 18°51'N 73°03'W. Rises to 2,303 ft/702 m.
The channel S of it is called Canal de la Gonâve or Canal du Sud, channel due E is Canal de St. Marc.

La Gonave is 20 miles wide, 60 miles long and 16 miles by water from mainland Haiti, quality health care on this island with its rough and mountainous terrain is virtually nonexistent.
It is estimated that 80 percent of all deliveries are unattended on La Gonave.
Currently, the program involves training members of the local community in basic midwife duties and setting up a system of monitoring births on the island to ensure that 80 percent of births are attended as opposed to the current 20 percent.

The Pride of Gonave capsized and sank before dawn Monday 50 yards from shore when passengers eager to disembark crowded to one side of the vessel.
