Gonaives is a port city with an estimated population of 200,000.
To say that Gonaives was traumatized is a gross understatement: 80% of the population was affected, more than 4,500 houses were destroyed, dead livestock contaminated water supplies, edible food was in scarce supply, crops were wiped out, access to the city was treacherous at best, and security was non-existent.
Gonaives’ hospital was damaged and closed down indefinitely, and health care made available primarily through small health centers.

When he went to the bus station to try to leave (in vain) as he has all week, not only were there many dead bodies around the bus station where he hoped to leave from, but they had also had had their HEADS CUT OFF.
Emmanuel Alexandre is the preacher of the main congregation in Gonaives.

GONAIVES, Haiti (AP) - Bloated corpses and weeping relatives filled morgues in Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne left more than 600 people dead, another tragedy on this Caribbean island in a year marked by revolts, military interventions and deadly floods.
Hardest hit was the northern city of Gonaives, where search crews continued to recover bodies carried away by the raging weekend floods or buried by mud or the ruins of their homes.
Gonaives, a city of about a quarter million people, also suffered fighting during the February rebellion that led to the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and left an estimated 300 dead.

In Gonaives, rebels swapped their looted police gear for civilian clothes when the French arrived, and stopped strutting around town with assault rifles.

One of the measures the Haitian government is considering is a rotating evacuation of the city to allow workers to dispose of the bodies, carcasses and debris that has been rotting in the streets for the past week.
