  Gonarch - PHLWiki
This is the reproductive sack of the Gonarch.
Gonarchs are powerful and well armored to begin with, and defeating them is made doubly hard since a would-be attacker has to contend with an army of tiny, bladed monsters first.
Gonarchs are able to eject a glob of liquid from their anterior orifice.

 Games - Gonarch
Gonarch, nicknamed 'Big Momma' by the developers at Valve Software, is an enormous alien that produces baby headcrabs.
Its anatomy is similar to that of the headcrab, except that Gonarch sports an armour-like exoskeleton and four spindly legs that hold it upright several meters above the ground.
Gonarch unleashes an elephant-like cry when angered or injured, and its approach is accompanied by a sound similar to the rapid gallop of a horse.

Gonarch's And Headcrab Populations - Half-Life Fallout Forums
This creature, twice the size of an adult elephant, is the only stage capable of reproducing, and it gives birth to vast numbers of infant headcrabs from its huge egg sac.
The gonarch has to produce large numbers of offspring because headcrabs have an extremely low survival rate.
Maybe headcrabs are more like worker ants for the gonarchs, so there is no need for headcrabs to turn into gonarchs.

Gonarch must be the name of the gigantic mommy headrab which you will quickly confront on this level.
While firing away, be sure to keep your distance as its claws can eviscerate you instantly; other threats include big poisonous globs that it can shoot at you, and little baby headrabs which do 1 point of damage (but they add up if you let them continue).
The hornet gun is a good albeit slow way to hurt Gonarch; the hornets go straight for the fleshy underbelly, although it takes quite a while to put a dent in the thing.

The Gonarch is an extremely terrortorial creature, defending its lair to the death, it will spin webs all over it, using its eggsack to produce the web and using its limbs to draw the sections out and stick them to walls of its lair.
The lifespan of the Gonarch is not known, but it is estimated at around a hundred, to a hundred and fifty years.

Headcrabs appear to be very social animals, often seen clustered in groups, and like sheep, the entire group often copies the actions of a single creature.
Headcrabs appear to be quite low on the food chain in their native Xen habitat, as bullsquids, Vortigaunts, and barnacles have been observed feeding on them.
In Half-Life, headcrabs were found to have originated from a large creature known as Gonarch, sharing similar physical qualities with headcrabs, including movement and appearance.

At the bottom of the pit, there's a slightly raised bit of ground that's destroyed by Gonarch when she dies to reveal a teleporter.
No, the pit in question is not the big hole in the ground in that open area, but a pit with a floor that you fall into after chasing Gonarch down one more tunnel.

On topic, I think the area around the gonarch's lair should have more headcrabs, half-eaten corpses and maybe a dead HEV scientist or two with headcrabs trying to "couple" with them through the HEV helmet (not HEV zombies, just dead scientists with heacrabs on their heads).
The gonarch itself should come out of the cave (or out of the ground, like the antlion guard), look at the player for a second and then charge.
Although I assume that this Gonarch is not the only one, this are could definitely feel a little more important than it does.

The gonome might even be the intermediate step between headcrab/gonarch, as opposed to the gonarch maturing directly from a headcrab.
What's clear is that fast and poison mutations are imperfect: Gonomes and regular zombies have means through which to sustain themselves, whereas the other two zombies lack any way to sustain the host for an extended period of time.
Those with traits which the Combine found to be useful for their purposes would either be cloned or developed into a Gonarch.

Some of the levels I found really magical - especially the level after killing Gonarch, with the huge spires and marvellous flights of "manta ray" creatures - and also I loved the corpses of scientists who had explored before, which set the whole alien feel off.
Some of the harder combats: Both Gonarch and Nihilath I found to be frustratingly difficult, both because they required specific tactics making them hard to fight on early attempts, and because the combats went on for too long.
The "human" feel of the factory levels: Okay, with the textures, they were clearly alien, but compared to what had gone before, they were too reminsicent of human constructions, and lacked that special Xen feel - decent levels but could have been more atmospheric.
