The Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska have numerous species of cephalopods, dominated by one diverse family of squid, Gonatidae.
Completion of an identification guide to the family Gonatidae will represent an understanding of the largest, most diverse family of cephalopods in the area, allowing future research in the fields of gonatid stock assessment and gonatid life history.
The chosen intern will aid in identification of both adult and larval gonatid squid, retrieve geographical information from an Access database and map distributions using ArcMap, create idealized drawings of specimens, and potentially assist in collection of specimens at sea.
