Ivan Goncharov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1847, Goncharov's first novel, A Common Story, was published; it dealt with the conflicts between the decadent Russian nobility and the rising merchant class.
In 1867 Goncharov retired from his post as a government censor and then published his last novel; The Precipice (1869) is the story of a rivalry between three men who seek the love of a woman of mystery.
Goncharov also wrote short stories, critiques, essays and memoirs that were only published posthumously in 1919.

Oblomov, the main character of Ivan Goncharov's novel, is widely regarded as one of the finest literary examples of the backward-looking landed gentry of mid-nineteenth century Russia.
Goncharov wants to show us exactly and in great detail all of the intricacies of the progression of the characters' thoughts and realizations, but often this causes the novel to drag.
Goncharov's literary powers begin to diminish and the story becomes more diffuse without really illucidating the reader as to the lack of motivation in the character.

Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov Biography / Biography of Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov Main Biography
Ivan Goncharov was born of a well-to-do family.
The novel expresses what is perhaps the most important conflict in Goncharov's work: the conflict between a love for the patriarchal, leisurely, fixed ways of old Russia and an interest and curiosity in the liberal and radical elements that were breaking through the crust of old Russia.
Goncharov also wrote an autobiographical apologia, Better Late than Never (1870, published in 1879), in which he attempted to prove to the younger generation that he understood the spirit of his age as well as they.

Uncertain Partners - Sergei N. Goncharov, John Lewis, Xue Litai book review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Goncharov, Lewis, and Litai examine in detail secret additional protocols where Mao, in return for long term Soviet economic and military assistance, bowed to many of the embarrassing conditions found in the 1945 treaty.
Goncharov, Lewis, and Litai successfully convey Mao?s mindset when the 7th Fleet began posturing in the straits of Taiwan and the Eighth Army crossed the 38th parallel.
Despite these methodological shortcomings, the conclusions reached by Goncharov, Lewis, and Litai were supported by the Russian government?s release in 1995 of a new batch of previously classified material related to the Sino-Soviet Alliance of 1950 and the events on the Korean peninsula from 1949 to 1953.

Abstract for 2001/12/14: Goncharov Polynomials   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Goncharov polynomials form a ``natural basis'' of polynomials for working with u-parking functions.
The combinatorial structure underlying this recursion is a decomposition of an arbitrary sequence of positive integers into two subsequences: a ``maximum'' u-parking function and a subsequence consisting of terms of higher values.
From this combinatorial decomposition, we derive linear recursions for sum enumerators, expected sums of u-parking functions, and higher moments of sums of u-parking functions.
