Gondola (rail) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In railroad terminology, a gondola is a open-top type of rolling stock that is used for carrying loose bulk materials.
Using a gondola, the railroads are able to haul a larger amount of coal per car since gondolas do not include the equipment needed for unloading.
However, since these cars do not have hatches for unloading the products shipped in them, railroads must use rotary car dumpers (mechanisms that hold a car against a short section of track as the car and track are slowly rotated upside down to empty the car) or other means to empty them.

Patent 4356776: Corner connector for open top rail cars
Disclosed is a corner connection for open top type rail cars such as gondolas, hoppers, etc. The top side chords of the rail cars have plates mounted to the upper and lower surfaces thereof which extend beyond the end of the top side chords.
When loads shift and contact the side or end walls of the rail car, sudden shock forces are applied to the end and side chords of the walls, and such forces are naturally concentrated at the corner connections of the top side chord and top end chord of the open top rail cars.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a new upper corner connection for open top type rail cars that prevents fixed end moments at or failure of the upper corner connection as a result of forces applied during loading or load shifts.

However, the elevation changed significantly at several consecutive rail joints immediately west of the derailment area; this would have contributed to car rocking and the resultant random lateral load oscillation from the north rail to the south rail.
However, as was indicated in the response to Rail Safety Advisory 02/00 ( see section 4.1.4), TC does not consider it necessary for air brakes to properly release from a service brake application in order for them to be considered "operative".
Although the rail traffic controller (RTC) is responsible to activate the emergency response to occurrences such as this derailment, the RTC function does not have readily available records of the location of all natural gas pipeline crossings, and was unable to provide this information to responders.

If the surface preparation of the car top rail is satisfactory, the operator presses the button which signals the microprocessor that the cleaning operation has been completed, and that the car is ready for the thawing sequence.
Returning now to the description of the thawing sequence, after the car top rail 54 has been cleaned and after the thawing area has been determined as being free of operator personnel, the shielding hood 10 is hydraulically positioned over the top rail 54 by limit sensors, and the hood is then hydraulically lowered.
