In Western symphonic music the flat faced gongs are generally referred to as tam-tams to distinguish them from their bossed counterparts, although the term "gong" is correct to use for either type.
gong is reserved for the gong ageng, the largest instrument of the type, or for surrogate instruments such as the gong komodong or gong bumbu (blown gong) which fill the same musical function in ensembles lacking the large gong.

Gong Gong (Chinese: 共工) is a Chinese water god who is responsible for the great floods, together with his associate, Xiang Yao (Chinese: 相繇), who has nine heads and the body of a snake.
In Chinese mythology, Gong Gong was ashamed that he lost the fight to claim the throne of Heaven and in a fit of rage he smashed his head against Mount Buzhou (不周山), a pillar holding up the sky.
The pillar suffered great damage and caused the sky to tilt towards the northwest and the earth to shift to the southeast.

It is still worth a listen and for Gong first timers it gives an account of changes the went through regarding line ups and development from the early days right though to 1977.
In a word, this album is plenty of everything that made Gong so beloved by some prog-rockers: musicianship (very few bands had so much great musicians at the same time - Malherbe, Moerlen, Hillage, Blake, Howlett), poetry (the major fault of "Gong Live Etc." is the lack of song's lyrics) and fantasy.
